Why I Love My Gay Boyfriend

Rate this book
When Veronica graduated with an MBA and dreams of saving the world, she never knew she would end up a corporate slave to the lipstick gods, in love with her playboy boss and in need of a gay best friend to make her feel fabulous. Straight out of school, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, Veronica has her heart set on an honorable job, such as saving starving children. Instead, she accepts a job at Gisele, a global cosmetic empire that seems to mock her every value. Veronica struggles to fit in until she meets Stevie, a gay co-worker, who immediately assumes the role of fashion counselor and fabulousness.

Under Stevie’s mentorship, Veronica flourishes as a vixen and marketing peon. But for Veronica to truly succeed at Gisele and seduce her boss, she must bequeath her soul to the makeup gods and sacrifice her friends in a ritual known as corporate brainwash. How far does Veronica go before she realizes she is losing everything she once valued, including herself?

So, This book is hilarious. I started reading the first paragraph and couldn’t stop. Veronica was one of those characters I would set up house in their brain because their train of thought is just so out there and weird and quirky. Granted, when I was approached by the publisher to read this book, I took one look at the title and arched an eyebrow. The contradiction alone was enough to make me wonder just how much I would like a book like this, but at the same time, I liked the humor in it. It was fun and catchy. So I accepted and I’m so glad I did.

This was a lighthearted, fun and enjoyable read. I thought I'd be a little too old in my mindset to enjoy this but I was wrong. I really enjoyed Sabrina's humor and her sarcastic wit. When Veronica was introduced to Jasmine Petite early on, the narration of their meeting had me laughing out loud and I found that humor throughout the book.
Well done Ms. Zollo. I will happily buy this book for a few of my more youthful clients in support. Please don't let any bad reviews get you down. If I did, I wouldn't be here by now, lol. You did a wonderful job. Brava!

Sabrina Zollo's debut novel for Central Avenue Publishing is a smart, sexy and engaging exploration of a young career woman making her mark in the cut throat corporate world of fashion and make-up.

Zollo's characters rise vividly from the page with witty and intelligent dialogue, entertaining story telling and arcs that satisfy. Though, on it's surface, Why I Love My Gay Boyfriend might seem predictable, rest assured it is anything but and readers should expect to come away from the story satisfied, considering it and reconsidering it.

Zollo's writing style is accessible. She gets inside your head and makes you 'see' the story and I think she has achieved much with this, her first novel.

I highly recommend it.

This is a cute, witty read. Following Veronica as she stumbled through a new job out of her element with Stevie there to help her was enjoyable an made me giggle. Great stress relief read. Not overly emotional, though quite humorous. The fact that it didn't end how I expected either was another perk.

Fresh out of college, Veronica didn't have a clue. She just wanted to find a job, but what she found was in the corporate world of cosmetics. She has a big crush on her boss, but he doesn't even know she's alive. But then she meets Steve, and he becomes her best gay friend. He really helps Veronica find herself and make some goals, and along this journey, it's hilarious. But Veronica doesn't realize what she will have to give up if she gets what she wants.....unless she gets a quick eye-opener.

Why I Love My Gay Boyfriend has many laugh out loud moments, it's quick paced and I really enjoyed the character dynamics between Veronica and Steve. The ending was a bit surprising but I can live with it. Zollo is a gifted writer and I look forward to what she writes next. A humorous chic-lit story that I'll be recommending to my friends!

There are many Veronica's we encounter in our lives who wrestle with their interpretation of what success is both individual and professional. Thus, Ms Zollo accomplishes this with a particular wit and humour and self-deprecating humor that makes you cheer for her in the end. 4 out of 5.....

Braine's Talk Supe review

That's the ending?!

The reason why WHY I LOVE MY GAY BOYFRIEND got a 2-star rating is because of the lack of resolution. I checked SZollo's website to see if there's a follow up novella or something but there isn't any mention of it so I may be wrong and for all I know, she might be writing the sequel right this moment. I can appreciate an open-ended conclusion but as far as this is concerned, the gates are gaping, the flags are raised and the trumpeteers are still blowing the "welcome" theme. After Veronica and Stevie broke-up, Stevie's character turned dark but it was presented in a word-of-mouth manner. Another missed opportunity for Veronica to repair their friendship and she didn't really make too much effort to come to him. With this, Stevie and Veronica never got to hash-out their differences and the ending left it at that. Stevie in his own world while Veronica's apologies left unanswered. I know this happens in real life but as this is a stand-alone story and a fictional one at that, I was hoping for a more definitive ending at least.

WHY I LOVE MY GAY BOYFRIEND would've been a cool chick-lit, the conflict was a good launching pad for a great drawn out resolution but SZollo not only gave Veronica an easy way out, she also rushed the ending and didn't give any solid closure to the story. At least give us an epilogue!

I received an e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I don't think I enjoyed this novel as much as I wanted to, and as much as I hate writing negative reviews, I guess I do have to write one after all.

Things I liked:
-The title and the cover. How creative, right? It's just very appealing. It's actually what lead me to read this book.

And that list just sort of ends there.
Things I didn't like:
-The main character. Veronica was very, very naive and annoying. She was just.. no.
-The whole story and its plot organization. Throughout this whole story, I was just waiting for it to become interesting. Like, okay, where is this going?

I'll admit that I scanned the last few chapters, but I'm not sure if they were worth reading or not. Guess I'll never find out..

Nonetheless, you might enjoy and it and you might not.
