My first thoughts on reading Dark Expectations were colored by the fact that I don’t have much experience in reading paranormal romance. To be quite honest, I wanted to read this story mostly for the cover. The women on it actually look like women that I’ve known and it’s refreshing to see a novel full of diverse characters who play a number of complex roles in their universe. This is one of the aspects of Dark Expectations that really stood out for me–I see too few books (particularly those set in modern cities) that actually reflect the world I live in in terms of who is represented in it.
The focus of this series is the relationships between different creatures in the supernatural world. I haven’t read the first novel in the series–while I wouldn’t say that I had trouble catching up, I feel as if I ought to go back and do so. There were a lot of nuances in the plot that I think I missed, yet it was very easy to understand what had happened in the previous book. In fact, one of the interesting aspects of this story was that it places a character (Ani) in a situation of leadership for which she doesn’t feel ready. I find power shifts fascinating to read about and I think that not only does Dark Expectations start the story out with one, but it lays the foundation to continue exploring what is ultimately somewhat interrupted in future endeavors by Eldridge.
This book would appeal to readers of the Twilight series though I think that its heroines, particularly Dana (my favorite character), are much stronger than Bella in that story. In fact, that’s one of the many ways in which this story turns my own expectations on their head. Women have power in this universe–they hold many of the cards–and from my limited exposure to paranormal romance, I feel that this is much too rare in the genre. Watching the ways in which Dana and Ani manipulate the situations in which they are placed is a lot of fun. These are not women that will lie down and let men walk all over them. One of the things that impresses me most about Ani is the trait recognized by the author as both her strength and her weakness–the ability to walk away. I look forward to seeing how this unfolds in the next book because of the ending of Expectations. (And I really can say no more than that because I don’t want to ruin it.)
All in all, this is a very interesting take on vampires and werewolves. And I have a feeling many more secrets lie ahead in the Soul Sisters universe!

So you've all read Soul Sister right? If not, run and grab your copy, read it, review it, and then go and get Dark Expectations.
You will love the second book just as much as the first. Its got all the action /drama you saw in Soul Sisters and Ani and Dana are still shaking things up in the vampire world. Ok.. i don't know why but I love when Janiera says they have skin like smooth dark chocolate or that's how they smell. I can totally picture this beautiful dark skinned man, *wink wink, with smooth chocolate skin and smelling like chocolate chip cookies. There is one such man in this book that did not get enough play in my opinion. :)
So, We know that from Soul Sisters Ani is now Queen of all vampires after Killing Donovan. She moved into the mansion with her sister Dana, Diego, Christian, and Marcel. The mansion was big enough for all of them and then some. Things took a while to get all cleaned up. The former vampire leader had let the mansion go and it was in dyer need of a good cleaning and paint job.
On the top of the list for Ani to do first as queen was get sworn in. A Vampire tradition from years ago. Its a huge party where all of the vampires from all over the world come to meet their new Queen.
There is a new romance a brewing that we somewhat saw coming in Soul Sisters. I'm not going to tell you who but once you read about it you will go, Aha! I knew it, just like i did. :)
There's also some strange goings on within the vampire and werewolf community. Christian came back from a vacation with his pack to let Ani know that vampires and werewolves alike are disappearing and its rumored that testing is being done on them. they know this because one of Christians best friends found a half dead vampire in a state he's never seen any other vampire in before.
When Ani goes to investigate these rumors, she herself is kidnapped by these lab coat wearing psychopaths. Ani will do anything to save her people and the werewolves but will she have to sacrifice herself to keep them all safe?
Why are they experimenting on the vampires and werewolves and just how far will they go to get what they want from Ani? Will Ani's family be able to save her in time? Read Dark Expectations and you will find out the answers to all these questions.
Oh and one more thing. Major cliffy.. OMG.! Seriously.. Janiera you are killing me here with the cliffy. I've already mentioned coming after you for the next book so here it is again. I'm going to super stalk you till the 3rd is out and i find out what's going to happen between Ani, Diego, Christian, Dana and all the others. But seriously. this was a great read. You will enjoy it as much as i did.
Received this for free through the "Read It and Reap" program!
This book picks up where the first book left off; Ani is now Queen Vamp and working hard to maintain peace and balance. Diego, her lover, seems to think his way is best and goes to screw it all up! I was railing at the very beginning at Diego. How dare the one person she loves and should be able to trust go behind her back like that? And then she's kidnapped...hooboy.
I like the storyline. I like this author's new definition of vampires and their creation (you get a hint of it, expanding from the first book). But I found this book hard to get into fully, mostly due to editing.
As other reviewers have noted, the book suffers from a lack of good editing. Names are interchanged, phrases are off or missing complete words (although it's funny how your brain mostly fills those in!), etc. I don't like to nitpick on those kinds of things, but it really does detract from the story because it derails the reader. The author has said there will be a new, re-edited copy soon, so that should help!
Some of the dialogue isn't very believable; it seems to stutter for me, much like how I felt in the first book with some of the action, etc., but you can feel the author's voice growing in leaps and bounds. I think with proper editing this story would grasp its readers much more quickly, pulling them in to this alternate world the author has created.
The ending is holy wow abrupt. I actually flipped back a few pages, reread, and then tried to move forward thinking I was missing something. I'm used to a lot of series having a cliffhanger ending, but this didn't feel like a cliffhanger to me. It was as if we left in the middle of a conversation and there should be another page.
Thanks for the read, Ms. Eldridge! I look forward to seeing this series to completion and finding out what happens!
This book has given me such a wide variety of emotions in such a short period of time! This book was very difficult to get into personally. When the end got closer, it became harder and harder to put down this book. I was so shocked when Christian got shot by one of the doctors as the massacre was in play at the compound. Backing up, the beginning of the book felt like I was forcing myself to read it and continue to pick it up. The emotions in here really flared at and from Ani. I found myself focusing more on what the grammatical mistakes In this book impacted more than the actual book. I was thinking that if someone younger than me were to read it, they would become very confused because of the grammatical errors. The characters really changed a lot in this book. Ani became more of a leader than I imagined. Dana really became secretive with other vampires, but isn't afraid to show her emotions. I felt like the sisters were becoming more and more distant with each other. Christian evolved into a very strong werewolf by the end. He is capable of making commands, but sometimes is absent minded when he gets too focused on one topic floating around in his brain. Diego had some personal issues when it came to his love life. Be likes to disobey Ani it seems. The first book I feel had a greater impact on me than this book. There were a clue of predictable moments and there were a few unpredictable ones. When Ani got kidnapped, I was reading from that moment on for as long as I could. Overall, the book was a nice read, but there is definitely room for improvement.
In this breath taking sequel we get to see so much more of the twins and what happens when you fight for what you believe in. Ani is now the Queen of all Vampires and she is fulfilling that roll very well. Dana and Diego and of course Christian are still by her side. She has some good days and she has some bad days but she is learning to hold her own. That is until trouble comes her way in the form of a group wanting the secrets of how to make Vampires and Werewolves.
When Ani is kidnapped by these fanatics they are determined to get that info out of her but she won't break. The gang will have to rescue her before they kill her. What will Ani do? Will they be able to rescue her in time? I so love this series and I can't tell you how much I love how the Vampires and Werewolves work together to get Ani back. This story flowed so smoothly before you knew it I was done reading and wanting more.
Everyone who knows me knows I love my Alpha males and well Christian and Diego do it for me. They have their quirkiness but they love and when they love they do it hard and with such determination to take care of the ones they love. This is a must read series that will captivate you right from the first page and have you turning feverishly to find out what is going to happen next.
Happy Reading and enjoy this new world Janiera Eldridge has given us readers!
I love women with power! Ok, now that that is out of my system let me tell you what a great book this was. Right from the beginning you knew it was going to be action packed and full of twists. Janiera does an amazing job painting the picture of vampires as perfect beings like the Greek stone statues of days past. Ani, the vampire queen, is a powerful yet thoughtful character who truly cares about the greater good and will do anything to protect her people. Dana, Ani’s human sister, is a fireball who knows exactly what her sister needs to hear. She is a fierce protector of her family while she still acknowledges her humanity. I loved the very attractive men in this book! Christian was probably my favorite because he was a man with a true heart. Diego… well I don’t want to spoil anything so all I will say is Diego. I enjoyed the route Ani took becoming a caring, and compassionate Queen who wants to unite the werewolves and the vampires instead of continuing the feud. The story flowed well and didn’t give you time to lose interest. Once I got into the story nothing could pull me out. I am anxiously awaiting the next installment of The Soul Sisters and hope you enjoy it as much a I did.
Dark Expectations is the sequel to Soul Sisters. In it, twin sisters (one human, the other a vampire) must adapt to a new way of life. Ani has stepped into her role of Vampire Queen and must deal with the accolades…as well as the dangers and the naysayers. She has to maintain relations with werewolves, prove to other vampires that it can be done, and protect both vampires and werewolves from humans who would destroy them. (No pressure, right?)
What I liked about this sequel is the extended roles of each of the characters. (Character growth is a MUST, IMHO.) I also enjoyed the conflict, particularly between Ani and Deigo (her lover). (Tension is another must for any good story.) Plus, we get to see some cultural diversity.
We also get to see Janiera grow as an author. Her skill set at weaving a tale is growing by leaps and bounds. I believe there needs to be more work done on editing (lots of typos) and formatting, but the story is there.
I’d rate Dark Expectations 3-3.5 out of 5 stars, because I’d like to see a cleaner draft of a published work. Nice job, Janiera! I fully expect to see more growth and great work from you. ;)
Janiera Eldridge Dark Expectations Book 2 in the Soul Sisters Trilogy
I loved Soul Sisters, so couldn't wait to start reading this once I received it. In book 1, the reader was introduced to Ani and Dana, the sisters, and Diego and Christian. These characters all remain important parts of this storyline, who continue to grow throughout, and a few more characters are added as the story develops.
Ani learns being a queen is harder than she ever could have imagined, and is thrown into the middle of a plot to use vampires and werewolves for their abilities by humans. At the same time, everyone is also trying to adjust to all the changes in their new lifestyles.
There were a few sections I got confused with, and had to re-read to figure out who the chapter was talking about, but overall it was well written, enough action to keep you gripped, entertaining and well-paced throughout. If you loved Soul Sisters then you won't be disappointed with Dark Expectations.
I was given a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this book just as much as the first one! I was really happy for Dana she was finally finding some happiness, and someone to love. I was really glad it was Christian there was chemistry between them in the first book and I'm glad they acted upon it! "She enjoyed the powerful heat that flowed off his body. He really was her knight and shinning armor; the only man since her late husband's death she was assured would give up his life for her. Now he was risking his life to save her sister. As she stood up tall on her toes to return the kiss a pool of fire churned in her stomach and her breath became shallow." I really cried in this one, I can't say why because that would be revealing spoilers! Can't wait for the next installment.
I’m not going to write a long review about this one, because everything I said in my review of the first book, counts for this one too. It’s still kick-ass, cool and wrapped in awesomeness. The writing got even better this book, thumbs up for that! So why would I repeat the rest? That would be the same as copy that review and paste it here, which is kinda stupid. I still love these books and I can’t wait to read the next one. Good job Janiera and keep me posted! Love you, love your book and whatever you do, DON’T STOP WRITING! Read my review on the first book >here< This review is also on my blog
Now that Ani has become queen, she is struggling with the pressures and problems that come with the title. Ani is trying to broker a peace between the vampires and werewolves. They have been at odds for years. She is informed that someone is capturing vampires and werewolves and performing experiments on them. Ani travels to California to find out more information about this situation. While in California she is kidnapped. Will her sister and friends be able to save Ani before it is too late?
While I enjoyed the premise of this book, along with the action and suspense, I felt it lacked believability and cohesiveness in parts. I was also let down by the ending. I still think this series has potential if those issues are addressed.
This is the second book in the Soul Sister's Trilogy and like the first book (Soul Sisters) this one has a unique and interesting story line. With one sister a Vampire Queen and the other a human you would not think that the two women had a lot in common but when Ani gets kidnapped Vampires and Werewolves have to come together to fight a common foe. I have to admit I did find this book a bit harder to get into than the first one because there were examples of missused words and some spelling and storyline errors that detracted from the story itself. But by the time I was a third of the way in, the story line itself had hooked me in and reeled me through a tale I found fascinating. I can't wait for the third book in this series to see what happens next.
This is an honest review for a DRC provided by the author...
Although I really enjoyed the first book, I had trouble getting excited about this second book. I think a good editor could be a huge improvement. I had to re-read several sentences multiple times to understand what the author was really trying to say. There are numerous typos, but those could be overlooked. The sentence structure challenges were a bit more difficult to gloss over.
I think the concept of the story was good, it just never really got off the ground for me. I'm sorry to say it because I did like the first book.
I read the first one of this series, because I was attracted to the covers and the storyline. It ended up being very confusing, due to the flip-flopping of eras and the constant spelling and grammar mistakes. But, the story was decent, so I was hoping that the second book would be better. But, I read around 30% (to pg.35 of 116) of the book, and it didn't get better. Nothing of importance had happened, yet, and the spelling and grammar and usage of incorrect words just got worse. No offense to the author, who seems very nice, but I cannot continue reading this. I will not be finishing this book. However, thanks for the opportunity to try out these books.
10*s. I recieved an eARC copy of this book directly from the author in return for an honest review. This is a spine tingling and amazing story!!! Book 1 was fantastic but book 2 is just phenominal!!! I am still in love with all the characters, because they feel so real!! This is a MUST read story that will reel you in hook, line, and sinker from beginning to end and a very well written story that will keep you guessing!!! Thank You, Janiera Eldridge, for another great story to this trilogy and I cant wait for the third one!!!
well i thought book 1 was awesome dark expectations was even better janiera eldridge is a amazing author once i started to read this book i couldnt put it down i even got the chills at one point of the story im not gonna tell you which part the only part i hated in the whole book was the end i didnt want it to end i wanted to know what happens next i guess i have to wait lol this book was great and i totally reccomend this book to every one
i was giving this book for a honest review and even if i wasnt giving the book to read i would of bought it is worth it
I enjoyed this book but it need a lot of editing. The names of the sisters are mixed up throughout the book. Christian and Diego's names are also mixed up. There also numerous times the wrong word is used. If you can overlook these things, it is an enjoyable read.
We learn a little of how the vampires are made in this book. The "secret" book needs to be found to explain everything. Donovan hid this book before his death. The ending was a little abrupt but it does set things of for the next installment.
I was given this book by the author in return for an honest review.
This was an excellent follow-on from "Soul Sister's". Seeing how Ani handled being Queen in the midst of an almost war was excellent. I loved the little twists in this book and am hoping there will be a third as can't wait to see what comes next. This author has a knack for drawing you into her books before you've even had a chance to finish the first chapter. Excellent
Ani is now the campire queen which comes at a high price. Ani is kidnapped by humans who want to create a super military of vampires. This is an action packed story that I absolutely enjoyed. However this book needs to be edited. Words are misspelled or missing altogether and the sisters names get switched frequently causing you to reread the last paragraph to straighten it out. I still recommend this book to any vampire or were lover out there. This book is very unique and refreshing! WaAR
Janiera does it again with "Dark Expectations"! Another original plot that will hook you in from the start and not let go until your finished. This is one series that is a total must read for all paranormal fans.
This review is based on a complimentary copy from the author which was provided for an honest review.
