Rate this book
Carving in the Round takes readers on a journey to develop their understanding of form, design, artistic creativity, and technical knowledge in wood carving. Seven innovative projects, which gradually increase in difficulty, introduce and build on important techniques for the reader to learn, practice, and adopt. Each of the projects includes scale designs, guidance on what woods to select, which tools will be necessary, the difficulty level rating, approximately how long it will take to complete, and what skills will be learned from making it. Clear, step-by-step instructions explain how to approach the details and form. Advice is offered on what type of finish to use, and finally the shape, size, and design of the base onto which the sculptures will be mounted is considered.

One of the most detailed and easy to follow books I have read on the subject.
It is clearly structured, so that a beginner can pick up this book and start carving almost immediately.
This book illustrates the tools needed in the craft, explains the different type of gouges, what to buy and how to maintain them. Also very importantly what types of woods you can use and what to look out for.
There are seven beautiful projects that are detailed and well pictured from start to finish. Each project differs in complexity and difficulty so you improve your skills as you progress with the projects.

The style of wood carving illustrated in this book in my opinion is modern art that is very fun to create and has astonishing results.
