Just OK

Not bad, but felt very rushed. The endurance was also anti-climatic and felt unfinished. Not bad but could babe been SO much better....disappointing.

So, at the behest of my friend, author David Carner, I have been slowly trying some indy authors out there. Now, this one came from another friend of mine, who read the first two books in the series. My overall take was that the book was good, but not fall-over-yourself great. It had a decent story focusing on Kellacun and her desire to obtain revenge from the Duke who killed her father. The reason behind the killing was somewhat convoluted. Suffice to say, the Duke is a mean bastard. There are some complicating factors, including that the Duke's son, Joshua, is in love with Kellacun. And, oh yeah, Kellacun is a wererat and does not know it. However, once she first transforms (during stress when she discovers her dead mother), she becomes a terrifying fighting machine, able to stand holding a silver sword (even though it stings just a little).

All-in-all, a fairly interesting story, even though I thought it was done fairly simplistically. The bigger problems I had were with the characterizations. First, Kellacun has no problems with being a wererat--those loathsome creatures. And it turns out that she has extreme sword skills she never knew about. Everyone in the book sounds the same. There is no differentiation between the characters' speech. They all sound the same, and they all sound as though they are modern folk. My final complaint is that there are a number of typos throughout the book. Now, maybe it is a nitpick of mine, but if you are going to put yourself out there, you need to understand the difference between there, their and they're. If you do not, you should not put yourself out there.

"The Wererat's Tale" came to life from fan email about the side character of the Abyss Walker series, Kellacun. Readers wanted to know where she came from and how she came to be.

In 2010 when I had an opening in projects, I created the little novel. It launched early February 2011 and was well received. Unfortunately, later that month Borders filed bankruptcy and the publisher that originally produced it went with under with them.

A few months later, New Babel Books bought the rights and released the title with the same cover art by Disney great, Terry Naughton, but altered the lay out. The sales continued to be strong later prompting a sequel. (See "The Wererat's Tale--The Ring of the Nonul.")

This was a fun novel to write. It explores the origins of Kellacun (From the core Abyss Walker series. Readers will get to enjoy the origins of Pav-co, Kaisha, Ryshander, and a cameo appearance of a few other Abyss Walker notables.

This series unveils a character modeled after Pete Koch, a former Oakland Raider and actor. (He played "Swede" in "Heartbreak Ridge with Clint Eastwood.)

With cover art by retired Disney Animator, Terry Naughton, this project was challenging and rewarding. My first time writing a female lead, I worked hard to make her believable. I hope you all enjoy it.

I had low expectations for this book and in all honesty, was convinced I probably wouldn't like it but needed to read it for a reading challenge.

I wouldn't say it's the greatest thing ever, but it was a very pleasant surprise to realize I actually liked the story well enough to plan to continue the series. It had a beginning that pulled you right in and the writing, events, and character growth were done well and at a steady pace to prevent it becoming tedious; and interesting to keep you anchored into the world.

This was the first spin off of the Abyss Walker world. This book followed the story of a young Kellacun who went on a revenge plot upon discovery of her parent's murder. She finds many new talents along the way and faces many challenges. It's a fairly short read, but well worth it. And if you enjoy the story, there are several others to continue it. As I writer, I'm proud to say that I was hired to continue this tale with book 4, expected to be released early 2017
