Sequins of Events (Arabella Black book 2) Author: D. A. Kelly
In the first book, ‘Brooms Away', Arabella (Ding) Black goes hunting for her missing/presumed dead, sister Rebecca, whose business she’s now inherited, due to Rebecca being sort-of-dead. Along the way Arabella discovers a whole other world of magic and mythical creatures. Including Sneath and Clutter, two sneaky goblins Arabella still owes a favour to. And then of course there’s Thornton, and the mixed feelings that arise when she sees him now. In this sequel, things are partly settled as she’s setting up shop, literally, but it isn’t long before she’s thrown into chaos. After a visit from her first customer Daphlee Coggle, a universally disliked snob, she gets an impromptu visit from Agent Walker Kane – boyfriend to her murdered sister, (who is now a sapling/dryad). Dalford’s Apothecarium has been awarded to Arabella in ‘Satisfactory Recompense for Crimes Committed Against ...’ her family. Dalford, the apothecary gnome, is a little like the Muppet version of Marley from Muppet’s A Christmas Carol; floating around ‘Magic, Mystree and Herbals’, glaring with intent and rattling invisible chains. To be fair though, it is his fault. And now the business, and it’s annoying dead owner, are hers, making her new home Arahn, a world away from Earth; the only home she’d known most of her life. It isn’t long before Arabella is interrupted by Imalia Grimm; aka The Grim Reaper/Death who insists they’re friends and needs her help to audition for a role. Much to the dismay of her parents, Death has decided to become an actor. More madness ensues as she also gets her first customer. It all sounds a bit insane, and it is in a good way. However I did notice a stronger voice and narrative in this one after reading book one when it first came out. Though you don’t have to read book one first, there’s a lot going on in book two and it would help to understand the world and context. This is sort of a mythical ‘Murder She Wrote’ with young half-banshee Arabella as investigator mixed with a fantastical style cosy town, brimming with every creature you could imagine. And some you could not. If you like the cosy paranormal/magic books of Erin Johnson, and Renee George I think you’ll enjoy this. It’s fun, bright, witty, sweet and still manages to have a darkness underneath that. And of course, the obligatory murder.
Wow, adventures galore in this sequel to Brooms Away. Part fairytale, part mystery and a lot of whacky fun. Imalia Grim (yes, as in Reaper) wants a sabbatical from escorting souls to the Afterlife. She wants to be a famous actress and she wants Arabella to help her. But Arabella is struggling to re-open her not-quite-late sister’s magic shop. However it’s not a good idea to refuse a reaper and she likes Imalia. When the naive Imalia decides to research being a murder suspect for a possible role, she ends up being arrested for the death of Daphlee Coggle, married to a wealthy relative of a recently deceased fairy king and Ting, her cousin/servant. Even though Daphlee’ body disappears, Imalia’s on the hook for her murder. When Mama and Papa Death show up, they ‘persuade’ Arabell to find the true murderer and the body. Along with the FCT’s agents, Walker Kane and his partner, Ava Cadwaller, there’s a not so merry chase for the killer. Trying to infiltrate the seedy part of town for intel, she runs into a familiar goblin pair, Sneath and Clutter. These little rascals will steal your heart and your wallet to be rich. This time around they help Arabella albeit for a future favour. With this cast of characters, what could possibly go right? With Mama and Papa Death holding her responsible for Imalia’s life and career this twisty mystery comes to a very surprising conclusion. If you want to know how everything started Arabella on her path, read ‘Brooms Away’ the first in the series and also a walloping great mystery by D A Kelly.
Arabella Black a half-banshee and half-dryad, has taken on all of her dead sister Rebecca’s responsibilities and debts including her shop, her house and Meeks her cat. However she is still so ill-prepared for the crazy life in Grimsmead, the village where she had come to live amidst all kinds of magical creatures some of whom were really monstrous and all out to swindle each other. She still had no control on her own magical abilities as a banshee. Imalia the only daughter of the grim reapers had befriended Arabella, and trouble loomed for both of them. Imalia wanted time off from her work as a reaper of death, which of course her parents did not approve of, and she wanted to become an actress so was carrying out research. This she took too seriously plunging them into a murder mystery which kept getting ever more convoluted and intricate. Poor Arabella was way in above her head and her only helpers where the two goblins known as Sneath and Clutter who she could never trust wholeheartedly as they would sell their own mother for a bet. But she was nothing if not loyal so when she saw Imalia arrested and her friends’ lives in danger she knew she was the only one to save them no matter what. I really enjoyed this second Arabella Black cozy mystery case and loved the humour and the banter and all the craziness dominating her life. DA Kelly writes a one of a kind, easy to read cozy mystery and I look forward to more books in this series.
Oh.My.Goodness!! I was looking forward to the release of the second book of this series and it is better than I was expecting, so much more than what I expected. Very well written, it flows at a fast pace, with magic, humour and sass to spare, this book is a lot more than a paranormal cozy or urban fantasy, creating a unique genre of its own. The mystery is very good and the characters become more and more real with every page turn. I know I just finished reading this installment, but, cliche as it is, I can't wait to read the next book! Highly Recommended!

Arabella Black is back! This sequel to Brooms Away is an imaginative combination of fantasy and cozy mystery. The fantasy world is so creative. Cell phones are replaced by fairy stones, the pinkmobile is the flying car I need in my life, and Harvey the talking cat sidekick is my absolute favorite character.
Imalia Grim, daughter of Mamma and Papa Death, is accused of murder and Arabella is tasked by the Deaths to investigate and clear Imalia as a suspect. There are plenty of other suspects and I was guessing about the solution until the end. This book is so snarky and funny. I mean, the phrase "gerbil's jiggly bits" is used. I laughed out loud! Looking forward to more Arabella in the future. Oh, who am I kidding? More Harvey!
I highly recommend reading Brooms Away first as there's a bit of backstory that will help you navigate Grimsmead. Besides, it's delightful.
When Death - aka Imalia - wants to be an actor . . . it falls to Arabella to help. And it's another wild ride for our erstwhile crew!
While Arabella is determined to make a go of her shop, Imalia is determined that in order to act the part of a murderer, she must "be" a murderer. You can imagine the twists and turns this storyline takes us on!
Never a dull moment, you'll be turning the pages, ignoring all else, till the very last page. The cast of characters is as imaginative and zany as ever. Looking forward to the next adventure!
[I was fortunate to receive an Advanced Reader Copy of the book from the author, with no obligation to review. The opinions expressed herein are given freely and are entirely my own.]
Arabella and a host of creatures go on an excellent adventure. All she wants to do is open her store and make a new life for herself. When she goes to deliver an order, she is faced with two dead bodies and her friend, Death, is there claiming responsibility. Death is only doing that so she can get experience for acting in a play. She just knows that she will become a famous actress. The problem is, the police believe her. See what a good actress she is?! Then Mama and Papa Death get involved and Arabella has to make a deal with Papa Death. Chaos ensues and Arabella is right in the middle of it. Altogether a fun adventure.
I absolutely LOVED this book! The first book in the series is cute and quirky. The characters and the world they live in is unique and so delightful that I was worried about how the author would be able to write another one just as fun. IT WAS WORTH THE WAIT!!!
Arabella is back! Her life is just as wacky and wonderful as it was in book #1, Brooms Away! I love the characters in this book and would enjoy having most of them as friends. Don't miss this new adventure! I wish that I was as brave as Arabella as she continues to find her place in her new home and as determined as Imalia as she seeks to live her true desires. I enjoyed every new twist n this awesome book!!
This book is awesome, Arabella inherits her sisters problems and store and has to deal with all her problems. When all of the sudden Imalia pays her a visit and says she is taking a pause from collecting souls and she wants to become an actress. Then a murder occurs and Death is the prime suspect. Arabella needs to find out who did it. This book is fantastic and I highly recommend it. The series is great too. My favorite character is Arabella. Thank you
Arabella is unwittingly drawn, by Death himself, into a murder investigation. His daughter is accused of murdering a member of an important family and he wants her innocence proven.
Whilst at times the murderer might seem obvious, the various twists and turns find the end anything but that.
Join Arabella and her friends as they settle into life in Grimmsmead. It’s not a quiet settling in either. As Arabella adapts to her new world she’s thrust into more danger and mystery all because Death wants a friend and a career change. Did I mention special guests drop into Arabella’s home among other places during this mystery? Tag along for unexpected alliances and new friends.
