Originally bought this book based on an advice from the BJP Leader and Rajya Sabha MP Dr. Subramanian Swamy. As we already know that in the modern context a Nation’s future is dependent on its economic fortune. Economic growth does not happen on its own or in a vacuum, it takes the ingenuity of managers (and leaders) of business houses to produce the desired result. It shall come as no surprise as to whenever the head of the State makes a foreign visit he appeals to the Business leaders of the Host Country to consider investing in his country.

It is true that Leadership is required in every facet of life, be it in politics, economics, or for that matter in the family too. At a time when the amateur middle level managers are causing a great harm to the momentum of India’s Economic Story, the book Timeless Leadership – 18 Leadership Sutras from The Bhagavad Gita by the Author Debashis Chatterjee comes to the rescue. This book empowers the managers to look beyond their official designation and start acting like facilitators and trustees of stake holders in the business for whose benefit their very role exists.

The Bhagavad Gita is truly a Timeless Hindu Scripture. The lessons here apply to all domains of human affairs. The Author being who is has used it for leadership lessons. Though the Author limited the book to only 18 Sutras (principles) to reflect the 18 Chapters of Gita, but I am sure that if he wanted he could have very well crystallized 180 Sutras.

The 18 Sutras as devised by the Author:

1. The Warrior’s Journey
2. Invincible Wisdom
3. Karma Yoga
4. Timeless Leaders pursue purpose as the source of power
5. Leadership is the Art of undoing
6. Leaders are Masters of their minds
7. Leaders are integrators
8. Timeless Leadership
9. The Sovereign Secret
10. Leadership is an adventure of Consciousness
11. Timeless leaders have Integral vision
12. Love is the Leader’s Essence, Love is Leader’s Presence
13. Leaders command their field with the eye of wisdom
14. Leaders harness Dynamic forces of Nature
15. Timeless leaders discover their invisible source
16. Leaders negotiate the crossroads
17. Leaders follow their faith
18. Leadership is Transcendence

This whole conversation between Arjuna and Krishna may be compared with an organizational set up as an employee and the manager (a.k.a. Leader) for our convenience.

Though it is too much to reflect on each Sutra, I will pick two sutras which in my opinion are critical for the survival of any organization.

Invincible Wisdom – Employee (Arjuna) may suffer from Fear of the boss, pressure of deadlines, grief over job losses, long hours of separation from family, self-pity and shame resulting from underperformance – all of these paralyze a person at work. The Author calls it as The Mind’s GPS System – Grief, Pity and Shame. Imagine if an employee is suffering from his mind’s GPS System and an amateur Manager (Leader) attempts to rub it in with his ego, then how do you think the performance of the employee in question will turn out? So, the leader with an invincible wisdom in this case would know that he is just being a facilitator and that the employee is not a slave and he is not a master.

Timeless Leadership – The moment when the leaders find out the ultimate meaning of life then they would have no place for ego in their mind. Almost all the time the Ego of the leader holds back the potential of an organization.

May be if one reads it for the first time who are normally used to prolonged reading might feel that the book is more about spiritual discipline rather than about Leadership lessons, but then Spirituality transcends all planes.

Before going to my review on this book, I would love to thank Mr. Robins J Alappatt for gifting me this amazing book on leadership. Robins is the Chairman & Managing Director of ITrans Learning Solutions, pioneers in ITES-Training and Production. Do check out ITrans for more details regarding the programs offered.

Now back to my review, I usually do not purchase Self-Help but has been lucky enough to be either gifted or provided a review copy of some amazing self-help books on several occasions. This is one such book I will treasure not only because I got it signed but it has been a book that has influenced me to a great extent.

What I enjoyed about Timeless Leadership: 18 Leadership Sutras from the Bhagavad Gita is the presentation, look and in hand feel of the book which urges a reader to pick it up. The chapters are well organized in such a way that there is a smooth and continuous flow of wisdom making the reader immersed in the purifying experience. This book unlike many books I have come across is based on Bhagavad Gita and that is one thing that makes this book unique. For those not familiar with Bhagavad Gita or simply Gita is a 700 verse Hindu scripture originally written in Sanskrit which is a narrative of dialogue between Arjuna, a Pandava prince and his charioteer Lord Krishna who counsels him regarding complex concepts like Dharma. The author here has done a brilliant job in selecting the relevant verses from Gita and helps the reader understand these complex spiritual subjects with examples from the present world and that brilliance actually paid off in making this book truly stand apart from the rest. As someone who doesn't enjoy much management book, I loved this one even though at times the author fell off track and thus failing to sum it up by the end of some chapters. But for someone who is looking for a serious management book, this book may be a disappointment as it lacked corporate or real life examples that a reader would expect from a book like this which could have taken this book to another level.

Overall for me, this has been a wonderful and inspiring read to a great extent that I have absorbed several of these tips. Highly recommended for casual readers but for someone who is looking for a serious management book, this isn't for you.

Do give a thumbs up if you enjoyed reading this review or comment below if you would love to share your opinion.
Looking forward to hearing from you guys.

Finished reading (for the third time) “Timeless Leadership – 18 Sutras from The Bhagavad Gita” by Professor Debashis Chatterjee (Director, IIM – Kozhikode). Exploring some of the greatest questions in human history – from the meaning of life to the nature of consciousness – the Bhagavad Gita has been a source of guidance for millions of readers around the world for over 2000 years. This book brings the ageless lessons of this revered Hindu spiritual text to an entirely new audience – today’s business leaders.

Addressing the narrow-minded, anxiety-ridden lives of modern business leaders, Timeless Leadership teaches you to refocus your perspective on the world and your place within it.

Outlining the ABCs of leadership success – Authenticity to your core values, Being a true leader, and Convergence between where you are and where you want to be – the book shows exactly how the teachings of the Gita can be used to solve life’s most puzzling problems.

Knowledge vs. Wisdom
Wisdom comes when the knowledge used at right time. This ability to use knowledge at right time is is one of the qualities of a leader.
Unselfish
Leaders think less about themselves and more about others to make the organization successful. Leaders give less importance to personal achievements and concentrate more on organizational success.

Absolutely wonderful read ... Opens your eyes to new ways of Spirituality -
The Scene is Set amidst the War between the Padavas and the Kauravas as Arjuna learns lessons in the Battlefield through Krishna who guides him.
Author speaks a lot about Our Inner Battles and what we must face in order to overcome ourselves (Unconscious Mind) and become who we're supposed to be(One with the Self) . Every line is powerful , powerful enough to skip through and not realize we've missed a Gem of a sentence thats so Profound. Inspiring . Kudos to Debashish Chaterjee for making a Contemporary Indian Spirituality book that too straight from the Gita.
A Must read for Every Young Leader.

The presentation, look, feel of the book is very good and one is enticed to bye by the look of the book itself. However the contents are bit confusing and in all the chapters the author although starts well but loses track and the summing up is not at all impressive.

May be I found book unimpressive as I am not very fond of management books. Took me more than a month to complete it.

This was a good read with the teachings of the Bhagwad Gita simplified and presented in a more relevant form to the present.
But, it makes more sense to someone already in the understanding of another plane than mere body and its goals.
