Originally bought this book based on an advice from the BJP Leader and Rajya Sabha MP Dr. Subramanian Swamy. As we already know that in the modern context a Nation’s future is dependent on its economic fortune. Economic growth does not happen on its own or in a vacuum, it takes the ingenuity of managers (and leaders) of business houses to produce the desired result. It shall come as no surprise as to whenever the head of the State makes a foreign visit he appeals to the Business leaders of the Host Country to consider investing in his country.
It is true that Leadership is required in every facet of life, be it in politics, economics, or for that matter in the family too. At a time when the amateur middle level managers are causing a great harm to the momentum of India’s Economic Story, the book Timeless Leadership – 18 Leadership Sutras from The Bhagavad Gita by the Author Debashis Chatterjee comes to the rescue. This book empowers the managers to look beyond their official designation and start acting like facilitators and trustees of stake holders in the business for whose benefit their very role exists.
The Bhagavad Gita is truly a Timeless Hindu Scripture. The lessons here apply to all domains of human affairs. The Author being who is has used it for leadership lessons. Though the Author limited the book to only 18 Sutras (principles) to reflect the 18 Chapters of Gita, but I am sure that if he wanted he could have very well crystallized 180 Sutras.
The 18 Sutras as devised by the Author:
1. The Warrior’s Journey
2. Invincible Wisdom
3. Karma Yoga
4. Timeless Leaders pursue purpose as the source of power
5. Leadership is the Art of undoing
6. Leaders are Masters of their minds
7. Leaders are integrators
8. Timeless Leadership
9. The Sovereign Secret
10. Leadership is an adventure of Consciousness
11. Timeless leaders have Integral vision
12. Love is the Leader’s Essence, Love is Leader’s Presence
13. Leaders command their field with the eye of wisdom
14. Leaders harness Dynamic forces of Nature
15. Timeless leaders discover their invisible source
16. Leaders negotiate the crossroads
17. Leaders follow their faith
18. Leadership is Transcendence
This whole conversation between Arjuna and Krishna may be compared with an organizational set up as an employee and the manager (a.k.a. Leader) for our convenience.
Though it is too much to reflect on each Sutra, I will pick two sutras which in my opinion are critical for the survival of any organization.
Invincible Wisdom – Employee (Arjuna) may suffer from Fear of the boss, pressure of deadlines, grief over job losses, long hours of separation from family, self-pity and shame resulting from underperformance – all of these paralyze a person at work. The Author calls it as The Mind’s GPS System – Grief, Pity and Shame. Imagine if an employee is suffering from his mind’s GPS System and an amateur Manager (Leader) attempts to rub it in with his ego, then how do you think the performance of the employee in question will turn out? So, the leader with an invincible wisdom in this case would know that he is just being a facilitator and that the employee is not a slave and he is not a master.
Timeless Leadership – The moment when the leaders find out the ultimate meaning of life then they would have no place for ego in their mind. Almost all the time the Ego of the leader holds back the potential of an organization.
May be if one reads it for the first time who are normally used to prolonged reading might feel that the book is more about spiritual discipline rather than about Leadership lessons, but then Spirituality transcends all planes.
