Farther Along: The Writing Journey of Thirteen Bereaved Mothers
"In this brilliant, carefully wrought book, Carol Henderson has given us much more than a deeply healing practice for the bereaved and for those who would help them. Here are the very hearts of those who have lost a child, and here is a wise and practiced way to be a companion to and healer of the bereaved. Henderson herself has lost a child; she has turned that searing experience into a triumphant gift of detailed instructions and luminous experiences to assist those who must travel the same difficult journey." - Pat Schneider, founder, Amherst Writers & Artists

A must for anyone who has lost a loved one, especially a child. This book is actually 2 in 1:
inspirational, touching stories from mothers who have walked the same path as you and are willing to share their journey so you won't feel alone
your own writing class, complete with prompts for healing through writing

This book details the evolution of a group of women who attend a journal writing workshop for bereaved mothers. Originally intended to be a one day event, the thirteen women wanted to continue and this compelling text shares ten years of their annual writing retreats and visits in between. The author, a writing teacher and a bereaved mother herself, guides the women through difficult journeys using writing as a tool. Whether you want to understand some of,the challenges of those who have lost a child or desire to see how writing can be used as a tool for healing, this compelling book is hard to put down.

I picked up this book knowing I am not the target audience for the book. I made my way through the book and enjoyed reading the stories and learning about these brave women. In addition, the writing prompts are a great resources for writers and writing groups. If you know someone who has lost a child, then pick up this book.

Although the writing aspect can be immensely helpful, I am much more interested in the women's stories and how they coped. Would definitely recommend to someone as a tool for grieving, but probably would not use it myself in this structured way.
