Geschichte Schleswig-Holsteins

Rate this book

Short history of the area that currently comprises the modern Bundesland of Schleswig-Holstein.

This is part of a series very similar to the OUP Very Short Introductions, with similar strengths and weakness: you get an extremely condensed introduction at a little less cost than a normal length book. Particularly in the earlier sections I felt that the variety of peoples, customs, conditions of living pushed at the limits of the book and the indeed called into question the logic of the idea of a history of Schleswig-Holstein that reached back into the medieval period despite, as was agreed back then that the two regions should be Up ewich ungedeelt, or forever undivided as one might say in English.

The upside of the shortcomings and the omissions due to there only being 124 pages of text is that I have been left with the desire to search for something longer. The question in such a short book is what is included and what left out. On the whole I would say the book is politics heavy, culture light with a little coverage of economic matters. So the issue is if that is how you like your Rode Gruett ?

There's a nice sense of a small region with its own internal conflicts dragged into larger conflicts with occasional outbreaks of peace (though some of those were quite long) the effects of this have not been straightforward, for example the German military was the largest employer in the region during the Cold War, the long hoped for arrival of peace and German unification saw the end of that economic benefit almost as a final blow after decades which had seen the sharp reduction of ship building, as well as restructuring in fisheries and agriculture.
