Multi award-winning author, H. D. Thomson, writes romantic suspense, paranormal and contemporary romance. She loves writing about tortured heroes and ordinary people placed in extraordinary circumstances. If you love fast-paced sexy thrillers with a great plot twist, strong women and exceptional men, then try Anxiety, the first book in her Smoke & Mirrors paranormal and romantic suspense series.

H. D. loves everything by Dean Koontz, Mary Higgins Clark, Harlan Coben, Christina Dodd and Linda Howard. Their fast-paced, twisting plots have all influenced her writing style. That and her love of romance.

From Ontario, Canada, H.D. moved as a teenager to the heat of Arizona where she graduated from the University of Arizona with a B.S. in Business Administration with a major in accounting. After working in the corporate world as an accountant, H.D. changed her focus to one of her passions—books. She owned and operated an online bookstore for several years and then started the company, Bella Media Management. The company specializes in web sites, video trailers, ebook conversion and promotional resources for authors and small businesses. When she’s not enjoying small-town life in Spirit Lake, Iowa or heading her company, she is following her first love—writing.

Kennedy Sinclair is a woman who is existing. When a stranger in a shopping mall gives her a pair of sunglasses her life is about to take a dramatic change. These are no ordinary glasses, they allow the wearer to see people in a whole new light.

Soon Kennedy is able to see when people are happy, joyful, angry, moody by seeing their auras. The problem is that when she looks at herself (or her boyfriend views her through the glasses) she is simply shades of gray.

A couple years back she survived an auto accident. Kennedy believes that she cheated death. Does the fact that she is colorless mean than death is coming for her soon?

The author packed a lot in a short story and at the end, makes you think about life and whether you are living it in full-color or simply existing in the gray zone.

Well worth the $0.99 on Amazon.

This is a 3.5 star read.

When you download books from Instafreebie you are running blind; there are no synopses so you're never really sure what you're getting. In this case that was a good thing!
If I had of known that the subgenre was romance (Ugh .... yuck!) I would never have tried this book and I would have missed out on a genuinely interesting short story surrounding a paranormal pair of sunglasses and how a person's past can taint their future. It was a gripping read that I would certainly recommend. (Minus the mushy, if that's not your thing ;) )

Not what I expected for this was another blind read and I found I loved it.
It was a short story but it all fit so well, I really found it brilliant with the moral behind the story the characters were lovable and it all binded with a great twist.
It opened me up a little to look inside myself and I like books like that, great read highly recommended. ~

Great intro book (short story) to the series. Loved the concept of what the shades could do and how the characters reacted to them. No spoiler here, but felt like an original concept. Will definitely continue with the series.

I got this book from instafreebies (now called prolific works).

I enjoyed the writing style but it was far too short! I thought it was a mistake when I got to the end so quickly. And that is the main reason I gave it 3 stars.

Deadly Shades Review

Wow, couldn't put this book down is was just that fast paced and engrossing! The love, betrayal, suspense, and hot steamy sexual chemistry had from the very beginning! The deep emotional love between the characters was just so very real. This was a very well written book and I will be sharing with my reading circle!

I read this in the Shades Series box set and this was my favourite in the set. I wish we got to see Kennedy and Luke's entire story!!

Kennedy is afraid to admit love because she is afraid of loss. When she finds a pair of sunglasses that show her people's aura, it changes things.

Short, swift and direct. This story may on the surface be a techno-thing, tad bit sci-fi, or splash of supernatural, or maybe one should say a dash of them all..The stage is set and loaded with a hunk-with-a-heart and a woman with a bad case of jitters. Maybe these not so rose coloured pair of shades can help her see clearly? A gift from this read is the mindcandy: " Our responses, reaction, and thoughts are based upon previous experiences we have had. For better and for worse. But when the past hampers us in the very now We need to let go. Best thing one can do is experience, evaluate, choose the best and most beneficiary way to put it to use. Never let the past prevents us from living, embracing life, loving, and doing all those things that are a part of a happy fullfilling life, then we are not really living." .
Eloquently told tale without a doubt, and brilliantly framed in a pair of very very special sunglasses.
