New system of Purifying Waters of Condensation of Steam Engines.--Invention MM. Cail & Co.--These waters being contaminated by a mechanical mixture of oil from the lubricated surfaces with which they come in contact often givo much trouble. Tho inventors propose agitating with petroleum, which dissolves the fatty matter, and may bo readily separated after standing a few minutes. Titration of Wines, Beers and Vinegars.--M. Duclaux.--An alcoholic or acetic solution on being run drop by drop from a small orifice, the drops are found to bo heavier, the more alcohol or acetic acid they contain. Hence if the number of drops necessary to make up a given volume bo counted, a table may be formed which can be made to show the strength of the wine, beer or vinegar thus tested. Now method of manufacturing Dextrin.--A mixture of 500 parts starch, 1500 parts distilled water and 8 parts oxalic acid is heated over a water bath until the mixturo gives no reaction for starch with iodine. The liquid on being neutralised with pure calcic carbonate, and allowed to stand for two days and then filtered and evaporated to dryness, affords about 220 parts of pure dextrin. No. 35.
