Schillernder Hintermann dieser Revolvergeschichte, in der es um Sex und Drogen, Poolparties und Parlamentarier, Meineide und Messerstechereien, britische Aristokratie und westindische Halbwelt, Politik, Spionage und Geldgier geht, war der Society-Osteopath, Portraitmaler und Gelegenheitsreporter Dr. Stephen Ward (1912-1963). Mahatma Gandhi, Winston Churchill, Ava Gardner, Mel Ferrer, Lord Astor und Douglas Fairbanks jr. zählten zu seinen illustren Patienten. Er hatte Mitglieder der Royal Family portraitiert und für den Daily Telegraph über den Eichmann-Prozess berichtet. Im Zuge der Profumo-Affäre wurde er 1963 in einem umstrittenen Sensationsprozess wegen Zuhälterei angeklagt und starb am Vorabend des letzten Prozesstags an einer Überdosis Schlaftabletten. Sybille Bedford (1911-2006) beschreibt in Jagd auf einen Lebemann mit unbestechlichem Menschenblick und der ihr eigenen schriftstellerischen Brillanz, wie Politik, Justiz und Presse einen unliebsam gewordenen Mann mit zwielichtigen Zeugen, prozessualen Finessen und geschickt lancierten Berichten zu Fall bringen. Ihre engagierte Reportage über den „öffentlichen, allzu öffentlichen Prozess“ schließt mit der Frage: „Was war der Grund für die gnadenlose Verfolgung von Dr. Ward und warum verfing sie? Sybille Bedford, OBE (16 March 1911 – 17 February 2006) was a German-born English writer. Many of her works are partly autobiographical. Julia Neuberger proclaimed her "the finest woman writer of the 20th century" while Bruce Chatwin saw her as "one of the most dazzling practitioners of modern English prose.
