I gave up at page 10 or 12, when the horse Jayhawk is described as a Quarter Horse. This story is set in the Civil War. The name Quarter Horse wasn't used until decades later. He may have been called a Quarter Pather, a short horse (as in short distances, not short in size), a Steel Dust/ Steelduster (after a popular stallion, whether or not he was actually related to Steel Dust) or even a race horse -- but not a Quarter Horse.
No stars for a major historical inaccuracy in a historical book.
