Thus begins Bulbul Sharma's delightful collection of stories about her aunts, young and old, tetchy and unpredictable, brave and exasperating. One aunt thinks nothing of leaving her village to walk up high mountains in search of peace and shelter, another ends up with a husband who cannnot cope with the daily humiliation of having to look up a his tall wife, and a third enters service in a palace that every day sinks a little deeper into the pond beneath its foundation.

Illuminated by a vast compassion for the travails of women struggling to cope with changing lifestyles and traditions, My Sainted Aunts is as much an insight into the lif of a lost generation as it is a rollicking read.

Se lo recomendaría a todo aquel que quiera leer una novela hindú o a una autora de la India. Me parece que esta novela puede ser un buen punto de partida si no has leído nada parecido antes. Al contener notas a pie de página explicando situaciones o momentos históricos; tener expresiones y palabras en hindi con su correspondiente significado en un glosario al final; estar compuesta por 8 relatos diferentes y; ser irónica, divertida y humorística; creo que es una buena opción para adentrarse en la literatura de la India y conocer más sobre el país, sus costumbres y sus ritos religiosos. Ha sido todo un acierto por parte de la editorial conservar algunas expresiones en hindi, lo que te hace meterte más en la India, empaparte de su cultura y aprender alguna palabreja (“dal” = lenteja, “gita” = canción religiosa, “didi” = hermana mayor o “Yatra” = viaje de peregrinación). Se supone que el libro es de humor, pero el humor es muy blanco y muy fino, y aunque en algún momento me he reído, tampoco es que sea para partirse el culo. Así que no lo hubiera catalogado como una novela de humor, sino más bien como una novela feminista, hindú y entretenida. A lo largo de las ocho historias, todas ellas protagonizadas por mujeres, conocemos a Mayadevi, Neelima, Boromashi, Neli, Bula, Mini, Anima, Roopbala, Gita y Rani-ma. Todas ellas mujeres luchadoras, feministas, que se atreven a romper los esquemas, las cadenas y los moldes encorsetados de la sociedad hindú de antes de la revolución de Gandhi y la independencia de los británicos, que hacen lo que quieren y lo que les apetece y dicen lo que piensan. Al ser una novela de relatos, unos gustan más que otros, pero en esta ocasión, sólo ha habido uno que no me ha gustado nada. Resaltaría “El Yatra a Londres”, “Desembarco en Bishtupur”, “Las tías y sus dolencias”, “Las primeras vacaciones de R.C.”, “A Simla en tonga” y “Las pruebas de una tía alta”. Me ha encantado por la rebeldía de las mujeres, porque quedan muy bien constatadas las costumbres, las vestimentas y los privilegios de las clases pudientes, por la originalidad de las historias y porque muchas de ellas son bonitas y esperanzadoras a más no poder.

Je dirais 3 à 4 pour le rating !
Une série de nouvelles délicieuses, à déguster en route ou au calme, au fil des personnages et des histoires qui défilent au continent indien, et souvent en train, ds un palais ou un autre emplacement assez original..
Ce sont les sacrées tantes de chacun, loin des classiques, celles qui n'int font qu'à leur têtes, et qui donnent du goût et du charme à la monotonie de nos jours.

Me lo compré porque eran varios cuentitos y por la portada, soy muy visual. Los cuentos son muy bonitos, tiernos, y permiten conocer algo de la cultura India. Recomendado.

I have grown up surrounded by women, my mothers loquacious circle of sisters, cousins, sisters in laws and friends. From kitty parties, to weddings, jagrata and mournings, I would tag along with my mother and listen to my many aunts tell their tales. Cranky mother in laws, absent minded husbands, vicious other women, lazy maids and disobedient daughter in laws were a constant topic. Add to it the exchange of recipes, cooked food, family secrets, gossips, invitations, travel plans and day to day wisdom was witnessed and learned by me.

It has 8 stories: I loved 4 of them. Stories were laced with humor and very good characterization of eccentric, recluse people. Mayadevi of Mayadevi's London Yatra'', Meera's aunts in 'My Sainted Aunts', grandma in Á child bride' and R.C in 'R.C's first holiday'are quite masterful and sometimes breakout characters.

Last three stories were a journey though I was not always sure what was the point of it. Only 'Trials of a Tall Aunt' had a conclusion of sort.

The most underated book. The book which could communicate to the millenials and previous genere.. I am sure like me many millenials of India would relate the character of Mahadevi with their grandmom . the book has a very crisp flow and subtle storytelling.

Entertaining and transports you to Indian culture...very interesting...novels.
