An oldie but a goodie. I read parts of this many years ago, when I was a teenager and trout fishing crazy. The author, an expert trout angler, discusses 30+ different river situations and how to find and catch the trout in them. Fast water, slow water, small stream big river. All aspects are discussed and tip and strategies given on how to catch the wily trout.
You'll learn more about: 1- The right lines, leaders and fly imitations for each situation. 2- Natural cover and stream topography along with trout hatches. 3- Casting and fly presentation from basics to advanced techniques.
This book doesn't give you the latest on fly tying techniques or trout fishing gear, but it does give you insights and strategies on finbing and catching them.
This book was written in the 1960's by a very well known and popular outdoor writer and columnist for a New York Newspaper. It is a great attempt to take the intermediate angler to higher levels of the knowledge necessary to pursue trout more efficiently and to find larger trout and enjoy fishing to the max. The age of this work only makes a better resource for the current trout angler and it provides advice in actually catching trout on the streams of the world.
This is not a beginner's guide to flies, rods and lines or how to cast, rather it is detailed procedures to get your flies down to the trout and how to fish the seams, riffles, pools and pocket waters. This is a great winter read. Do your study for next opening day during January and February for a better time in the spring and summer times for fishing.
The illustrations in this book are really great and are by the author, Roy Ovington. I enjoyed the presentation and thought full discussion by the author and gave the book 5 Stars.
This book was written in 1960 by a well known awesome outdoors writer Ray Ovington. This book is awesome because it teaches us how to find awesome fishing holes find great fishing spots on the river and know how to fish them. It is not only important to know how to find great fishing spots and what to look for but how to fish them. This book really teaches you how to be able to see were the trout are laying and were to swing you line to hook a fish.I really like this book because isn't really awesome people and read this and really study this and learn how to fish it's awesome that someone can read this and learn how to fish and they will get why people like fishing. Ray is the main character and protagonist. The fish are the antagonist in this book. They are going against Ray. Ray is showing us how to beat the fish If the fish weren't the antagonist then this book wouldn’t exist. I love fishing but this book inspires me to fish more and I feel like I will be able to fish better. My favorite parts of this book is The amazing drawings in this book and how he labels everything it really shows you were to swing your line and what he is talking about. I think one of my least favorite parts of this story is just the big vocabulary I understood it. But people with Little vocabulary or are younger it would be a bit harder to read but it is still not bad to read. So I am really happy about reading this book and you guys should to if you are thinking about fishing or already fish definitely read this book. If you want to start fishing this is a good book to red to get more information about fishing I definitely recommend it.
This is the book I learned to fly fish for trout from. You can still find it and even though it is dated by references to smoking and alcohol, it is still a good primer for the trout fisher person.
