This book covers signal processing from an applications perspective. The theory, which all too often is presented as complex derivations with little intuitive understanding on the part of the reader, is presented with examples from image and audio signal processing. The algorithms developed are presented using MATLAB in order to allow the reader to experiment with "what-if?" scenarios. The book also provides a gateway to the numerous signal processing resources on the World Wide Web. There is no substitute for using "real-world" signals to experiment with, and the book provides pointers on where to begin. The book presents an introduction to the area of digital signal processing which is the key to understanding multimedia signals such as speech, audio and video. It is written in a tutorial style with the emphasis on code to illustrate various algorithms and techniques, and offers a "hands-on" approach to present signal processing theory in the context of practical applications.
