CHEYENNE GOLD by Max Brand (pen name of Frederick Faust) is the third and final book in the Rusty Sabin/Red Hawk trilogy that was originally featured in Western Story magazine in the 1930's.
Red Hawk sees the need for guns and supplies for his Cheyenne tribe and slips away to sacred grounds to find gold to trade for goods and to benefit the Lester family that are his only white friends.
Once bringing the gold to town, the situation turns for the worse based on white man's greed of gold, particularly in the form of a man named Charlie Galway who immediately makes plans to not only steal the gold, but discover it's source.
Running Elk, Red Hawk's constant nemesis is plotting ways to undermine both Red Hawk and Standing Bull who is Red Hawk/Rusty's blood brother and leader of the tribe.
Once again we see Red Hawk/Rusty face opposition and deceptive actions from both the white men & Cheyenne leaving him confused again in his identity amongst either group and adds to his alienation and loneliness, as he is at a disadvantage in both worlds because of his honesty and at times naivety.
Faust has done a wonderful job throughout the series of portraying how difficult it must have been to have been in Rusty's shoes in the white man's world as well as the difficult path set before him as a white Cheyenne in that world.
Without reservation I can recommend the series to anyone who likes Max Brand, western fiction, and stories of great courage where the main character survives because of his honesty and character.

The conclusion of the Rusty Sabin / Red Hawk trilogy. It just seems that people are always trying to take advantage of him!
