Pronunciation Games is a teacher's resource book containing photocopiable pronunciation games for use in the classroom. Each unit contains an enjoyable activity designed to raise learners' awareness of an aspect of English pronunciation. The activities are suitable for use with a wide range of levels and focus on pronunciation points ranging from individual sounds and word stress to sentence stress and intonation. The Teacher's Pages provide clear instructions for conducting each game, background information and suggestions for adapting the games to the needs of particular groups of learners.
A great resource for pronunciation teaching, especially since you can adapt a lot of the activities to suit your own / learners' needs. Whilst it's based on BBC English, it can easily be adapted for Lingua Franca Core or other native-speaker dialects of English so it's great in that regard!
What I really love about it is that some of the activities involve active production, not just perception and the outdated 'listen and repeat' approach, and that it's very learner-centred.
That said, I don't find all the activities useful and don't necessarily agree with what point they're trying to teach (and how) but most of the activities are great for awareness raising and practice, particularly if you've already covered the pronunciation point previously and just want to consolidate it with a fun activity.
The majority of the games are easy to follow and adapt but some are so complex and convoluted that I wouldn't bother trying to explain them to the learners. I think they'd get lost and too frustrated in the process.
All in all, a great supplementary resource that teachers can dip in and out of, and should be especially useful for ESL teachers who feel confident dealing with pronunciation issues.
I have used a couple of these activities in my class, and the classroom really enjoyed a few of the activities. Phonics are not a major part of my lessons, but if I notice probables with certain phonics points, I’d probably use an activity from this book in the following lesson, but only as a final activity.
