More quantitative than other books that veer toward social history in this era. However, if it wants to advance that the diverse group of skilled workers all coalesced under the umbrella of "mechanics," it should advance a broader theory. Certainly, this is not usual. Other scholars suggest that shared suppression of other races allowed for white unity -- at any rate, it deserves further investigation within the book's covers.
