Akitas: Everything About Health, Behavior, Feeding, and Care

Rate this book
The sturdy Akita, a much favored breed in his native Japan, is a loyal and affectionate family dog that thrives on companionship with humans. This book is a brand-new title in Barron's extensive line of Complete Pet Owner's Manuals. They advise current and soon-to-be pet owners on the care of dogs and cats of virtually all recognized breeds, as well as on birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, small mammals, and even exotic creatures like tarantulas and sugar gliders. The information in each book is authoritative but the language is non-technical and easy for every pet owner to understand. Every title in this series is individually written from first page to last by a breeder, trainer, veterinarian, or other animal specialist. All Complete Pet Owner's Manuals are filled with high-quality color photos and instructive line art.

As a long time Akita owner, and someone with experience in dog shows and training with Akitas, I found this book to be very informative, especially in regard to the history of the breed and the temperament. I appreciate that the author is blunt and clear about some of the more difficult aspects of the breed and hope that anyone interested in possibly owning an Akita will read this and take it to heart. It is an older book, so some of the information is a bit outdated, but still useful. It is one of the better Akita breed books I own, particularly for its small size.
This book was written before the official breed spilt, so there are photos of Akita-Inu, but the book is about the Akita (American Akita for those outside the USA).

Very information, interesting breed history. Worth the time to read it even though I realized very quickly that this isn't the breed for me.
