As with every book compiled of short stories, this one holds some real gems. In fact, the story from the book's title is one of my favorites. As mentioned in the book's introduction, these stories and illustrations depict a simpler, softer society, filled with realistic, believable characters that share similarities with which the reader can truly relate. I liked the moral of showing kindness to everyone, no matter how unlikable the recipient, as demonstrated in "A Plate of Cookies". I enjoyed the display to true charity and generosity of Christmas in. "53 Pennies and a Comic Book", and the patriotism as well as the adage of watching over one's neighbor in "Pipes in the Snow". Actually, all of the stories have true merit and added with the beautifully and magnificently created illustrations, this book is a real keeper.
