Here is a time honored guidebook that I look for every year. For my spring trip to Gotham, I read through this florid livre rouge as a pleasure, magazine style, even snacking on the famed starred restaurants that I might try one day. FYI--the starred system Michelin employs dates from 1926.
Where else could I find my favorite Mid Manhattan French bistro described as "Take in the creaky wood floors and parchment-colored walls hung with French-themed jigsaw puzzles. Then indulge in chilled leeks dressed with the famous house vinaigrette..."
See you there at Chez Napoléon, 365 West 50th Street.
I just bought this before my trip to NYC last weekend. I found it extremely up-to-date and the restaurant reviews were right on target. I also love that this guide (and the DK guides) show pictures of the restaurants....something you don't get with Zagat for instance.
I like the no nonsense reviews and insight of Michelin. If the in-laws are coming to New York City for a visit and I want to impress them, I look here. Knowing which chefs obtain a Michelin star always impresses visitors.
