Be on the frontline or in the trenches with Nick Fury's elite squad of the Howling Commandos! The Resistance against the Nazis is now in France- will a young woman turn the tide for the Commandos? Following the earliest, legendary adventures of Nick Fury, war hero!
First appearance of Nick Fury and 'Dum-Dum' Dugan! Oh, and plus the rest of the Howling Commandos! I am really excited to read about these guys and see all of their adventures! This comic series is based in the 40's, and the commandos are a specialist team that deals with extremely dangerous missions for the army! There was an awesome page right at the beginning of the comic that had all of the commandos in kind of a group photo and a brief description of each of them - I loved that so much! Overall, a good first comic and I can't wait to read more!
Fury premiers in a bro filled ok war story. Read for a cheesy WWII adventure, the introduction of the howling commandos, and racial & ethic stereotypes. Skip if you want a Fury who reminds you of Samuel L Jackson.
SGT. FURY AND HIS HOWLING COMMANDOS #1-6 (Nick Fury's First Arc)
This one was a challenge to get through. Unlike many of Lee and Kirby's better work, this one doesn't really have any arcs at all. Instead it feels like the very thing they're known for avoiding: one-off stories that are completely inconsequential to the characters. There are no ongoing arcs, just formulaic cookie cutter stories of the week.
But SOME ISSUES are exceptionally better than the rest, such as the very first issue which serves as a great introduction to this cast of characters, and the 4th issue which stands out as one of the most impactful comic book issues ever published in HISTORY. The events of the 4th issue even carry into issues 5 and 6, giving some semblance of an arc in an otherwise static and unchanging comic book.
All in all, the usual strengths of Lee and Kirby are here, in that there's great visual storytelling and great dialogue personifying each character. Honestly, the well defined characters was the one thing getting me through this. It just would have been nice to see these well defined characters actually GO THROUGH something, rather than never experiencing a single life altering event, issue 4 aside.
