‘Our shampoo and our combs, will give us relief’ - Lice and their treatment in a fun book
Israeli author Dr. Ilan Gruenwald is joined by his daughter, illustrator Adi Portal, in creating this excellent children’s book - MAKE WAY FOR LUCY McKAY - an accessible and entertaining way to teach children about head lice and how to respond to an infestation. ‘The treatment for lice infestation is relatively easy, but it requires the child's cooperation, which can be challenging as it involves meticulously combing the hair with a very fine-toothed comb.’ Related in a musical rhyming pattern, Lucy McKay, the louse, is introduced, lying on the petal of a flower: ‘One bright summer day, on a stack of hay, lay a cute little creature named Lucy McKay. Relaxed and content, without any worry she lay there all day, no need to hurry.’ Suddenly the bully James disturbs her sanctuary and Lucy is off to find a home, examining all animals (none of which are acceptable) and she (and her folks) find rest in the hair of little girl Annie-May (and friends) and ‘head lice infestation’ begins - along with a useful guide for treating lice, a fine way to unite parents and kids in the path to recovery. The book is a joy to read and very instructive - in a fun way. Highly recommended
