A Flower Amidst the Flames
The allure of roses is undeniable, but beneath their delicate beauty lies a deadly truth; they have thorns, and they will kill…
Princess Belyx Velena is far from an ordinary princess. At night, she trades in her tiara for blades as a secret assassin for The Order of the Rose, an all-female organization founded by her great-grandmother to rid the kingdom of tyranny and violence. With her mother gone after being murdered by the now extinct Fae, the kingdom is at risk from four powerful gangs locked in a deadly struggle for the throne.
When her father's key to the hidden Fae artifacts is stolen, Belyx embarks on a perilous journey to retrieve it, only to rescue a sarcastic thief named Enzo. He becomes an unexpected ally and more than just a partnership brews between them. With danger at every corner, the race to the key becomes far more deadly, and trusting others will be the true key to Belyx's survival. For years, Belyx's grief remained hidden behind her assassin mask. As the line between her two personas starts to blur, she must confront her inner demons and trust her growing feelings for the thief in order to save the kingdom from an even greater threat than she could have ever imagined.

good story
The author could use a good editor, but has a good story here. I enjoyed the characters to the end. Please let others read the next one before you publish.

I'm actually not going to finish this book right now. I don't know how to explain it because I love the storyline, but it isn't holding my attention. The princess, the thief, grandmother and the city they live in is all exciting, but it isn't holding my attention.
Maybe I will come back to it one day.

⭐️⭐️ 2.5 stars for me
This book had really great potential. I like the concepts of the plot, but the execution was just poor. There were SO MANY grammatical and syntax errors I was left confused every couple of pages. Sorry, but I thought for the whole first half of the book English must not be the authors first language until I went and read the bio 🫠 It almost felt like this was someone’s rough draft, and if it got a few more edits it would honestly be good.
My other issue was that the characters felt pretty shallow. Belyx (the princess) is supposed to be an assassin/spy. However, when she finds various clues or it feels like there’s a detail the author is trying to foreshadow she goes “oh I won’t push on this”. I was left so frustrated. This book was honestly a struggle to finish. If you can’t read through poor sentence structures, incorrect grammar, and confusing dialogue then this book is not for you.

I thought I would take a second to thank you all for reading my debut novel, A Flower Amidst the Flames. It truly encompasses everything I love about the genre of YA fantasy and I feel grateful to share it all with you!
From its action to characters, this book is near and dear to my heart and the ideas came to my out of a very difficult time in my life and I always want to portray a piece of myself in everything I write. I hope you enjoy A Flower Amidst the Flames as much as I did!

ARC Review
Scale information:
1: terrible, awful, I cannot stop ranting about how bad it was; 3: this is exactly what I expect from a book of this genre; 5: I cannot stop thinking about this book, I must own a copy, I will tell everyone to read it.
I was really underwhelmed by this. It's totally in my niche of books I enjoy, so I'm pretty disappointed. Frankly... it reads like a rough draft before it hits "first draft" status. If it was more polished I think it would have been great; the world building and the plot was there, it was just subpar in execution. The ending was good in content: it resolved the plot from the book without leaving any unnecessary cliff hangers. There is no one in a perilous position, there is no last-minute reveal that is left in mystery. It ends with an epilogue a few months after the end of the book.
The dialogue really grated on me; it was like taking a modern YA HS novel and changing the setting. I don't expect all fantasy characters to speak Ye Olde English, but the modernisms were a bit much. And there were a number of incorrect words, such as using "droll" to mean boring, or "irradiated" instead of "eradicated" (as well as numerous grammar mistakes). Plus the whole "the women inherit the kingdom" thing doesn't really mesh with the "women can't do anything in this society" vibe? (we have the MC as a princess, and her mother, her maternal grandmother, and her maternal maternal great-grandmother were all Queens of the country)
I also don't see the need to create an autistic-coded character only to later have the MC make an ableist comment about her? Because other than when she was introduced + when the comment was made, it didn't come up in the story at all.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I liked this story, though there were times when I did want to hit the FMC with a shovel, until I remembered she was young.
The world building is ok, though I hope it’s expanded upon more in the next book.
The plot had a few twists and turns, action, betrayal to name a few.
Would like to read the next book and see what mayhem the characters face.

I enjoyed reading this book. I really liked the FMC, I found her to be empowering as she doesn’t pretend to be anything other than herself. I found it an easy read and the storyline kept me hooked. I am looking forward to reading the next story in the series.

When I heard this was similar to ToG, I was a little hesitant to read…but it’s so much better! The princess assassin girl was so complex and interesting and my jaw slammed on the floor at the ending. This is going to be a series as well!!! Sign me up.

I enjoyed the story. It reminded me of a ninja/ Robin Hood mix that satisfied me with the good winning. This was the first book in a series that can be read as a stand alone story with a cliffhanger ending.

I enjoyed this story. It gives off ToG vibes but is much more than that comparison. The characters are likable, with their flaws and all. I loved how the ending ended with a full cliffhanger, leaving me stunned and not knowing what to do with myself.

I need the sequel like yesterday. The characters really spoke to me and the twist at the end was very unexpected. Very good debut!

Excellent storytelling. Intriguing story. There is enough ‘I wonder what happens left to let me get lost in Freya and captain Thomas(was it?)’s story. Tell me more.

Belyx Is a badass. She doesn’t pretend to be anyone she’s not and doesn’t need to put anyone down to be strong and fierce. It’s worth the read for sure.
