When Barnaby’s dad leaves the house one day and doesn’t return, he and his mum have to go and live with Granny Hogsflesh. Sure she has a big flash house and lots of money, but she runs Hogsflesh Pickle Company and insists they eat pickled egg and onions constantly. Not to mention her terrible vinegar breath. Barnaby has a strange old diary that his father dropped accidently on his departure – and as Barnaby delves deeper he discovers secrets about his Granny and her past. Did she kidnap his dad and have him pickled in her secret cellar?

took a while to get through this, as never had kids in one place at same time, but when I did, we all liked it, some were clamouring for more chapters when I was worn out with reading.
Very much like Dahl, with horrid characters, and creepy goings on, and a good bit of nerve wracking intensity to keep us all going!!

The Curse of the Bogle's Beard mixes Dahl and David Walliams-like black humour with fantastic characters and overall, Siobhan Rowden's début novel is great! I read also that Rowden hates pickles and beetroot. How very interesting.

This was the last book I was reading to my youngest daughter at bedtime, but we never finished it together, time was running out where she wanted to be read to at bedtime. However I was enjoying the story and was left on a cliff hanger of what precisely Granny Hogsflesh had been up to all this time. So I resolved to finish the book myself without a daughter to read to. I’m glad I did, throughly absorbed from beginning to end.

If you have a kid (or you are someone) who loves all things disgusting, then this is for you. Go into the secret ok pickling everything, from onions to toenails and other gruesome things. All this while navigating the family dynamics of a young boy called Barnaby. His dad has just mysteriously left their house so his mom and he are forced to move in with their pickle-tycoon Grandmother. That's when things start to get strange, and smelly!
