DEADLY SILENT is the Fourth book in a new crime thriller series by best-selling author Ann Girdharry. Having read and loved the previous novels in the series, I was anxious to continue with the series. While this novel can be read as a standalone, I would recommend starting with book one for clarity and content. The series features Detective David Grant and a top criminal profiler, Ruby Silver. This police procedural is enhanced by providing the reader with greater insight into the mind and motive of a killer. This fascinates me, and I feel that this novel will be well received and appeal to a wide audience range.
Novels in the Detective Grant and Ruby Series Include: 1. Killer Motive (2019) aka Deadly Motives (Read) 2. Deadly Secrets (2020) (Read) 3. Deadly Lies (2021) (Read) 4. Deadly Silent (2023) (Read)
This is my review of Deadly Silent.
In this novel DCI David Grant and his criminal profiler Ruby Silver, investigate when the body of a disturbed young woman, Phoebe Markham, is found after jumping from the ledge of an upper window of a Psychiatric Hospital. She had problems but was this a suicide or a murder to look like a suicide? There was no forensics evidence for a perpetrator. A killer in hiding!
It seems a clear-cut case of suicide but things are never what they seem. Lots of secrets.
As the team dig deeper, they uncover a dark web of silence and plenty of secrets around the death and the hospital.
Emma had met her best friend, Phoebe at the Psychiatric Hospital, while they were both in for treatment. Emma had lost her whole family as a child, they were murdered in their house, while she had been upstairs. She now suffered from post-traumatic stress since their death, but now was getting treatment as an out-patient. Phoebe had been sexually assaulted as a teenager, and when she heard that her perpetrator was being released early from prison, she panicked and had a relapse in public and was back in the hospital.
Emma was the last person who spoke to Phoebe at night, and told her she would be there in the morning to comfort her.
Time is running out and DCI David Grant and his team (DS Diane Collins, DS Tom Delaney) along with top criminal psychologist Ruby Silver race against time to find the killer.
I kept flip-flopping throughout the whole book, trying to figure out who the killer was, and I was in the dark right up until the final reveal. I like how this novel kept me guessing until the very end.
This is a fast-paced plot with lots of twists and turns. The characters are relatable and believable, and DCI Grant interaction with his team is totally engaging with the characters coming alive on the page.
The story was really enjoyable and well written. Highly recommended! Many thanks to the author for my digital copy.
Thank you Ann Girdharry for the advance copy in exchange for a honest review. When Phoebe Markham falls from the top of the psychiatric hospital DCI Grant and Ruby are called to the scene. They soon start to have doubts it was an accident. They talk to Phoebe's best friend Emma another patient and the hospital and the last person to talk to Phoebe. The hospital are quick to say she is unstable and discredit her statement. Then Phoebe's nurse is discovered dead. A gripping thriller highly recommended.
I received a copy of this book through Voracious Readers Only, and didn't notice it was the fourth in a series - but it works very well as a standalone novel. The characters were introduced sufficiently, though I imagine if you had read the previous books, it would not have felt too repetitive either.
I really liked Ruby as a character, and they were all distinct people with different personalities. They were captured well. Early on in the book, I was so sure I had solved the case, but then the story threw me for a loop. I was excited to keep reading.
Some of the grammar wasn't perfect but not so much so that it was hard to read, and some of the writing was a little childish and simplistic, but it did not detract notably from the plot. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone who likes a casual thriller.
I was asked to read an early copy of Ann Girdharry’s new book, Deadly Silent and I jumped at the chance.
The book starts off with a young women in a mental institution that is found dead below her window. The initial call is that it was suicide but one person, Detective Grant, feels like it could be more and starts digging more into her case.
This book was the right kind of pace for me that kept my attention and kept me guessing. I didn’t see the end coming which is also another plus because I read a lot of mystery/detective books. Overall, I would recommend this book to friends who want a quick mystery read. And I think I’m going to pick up the first three books in the series and read those too.
I really enjoyed this. It was a difficult subject matter to read about but was handled superbly.
In this, Grant and his profiler Ruby investigate when the body of a troubled young woman is found after jumping from an upper window. It seems a clear-cut case of suicide but things are never that simple, are they? It seems that there are plenty of secrets from the past around and I enjoyed how the team conducted their investigation and I was none the wiser until right at the end. The road leading to the final reveal was very cleverly done and I loved how my brain kept flip-flopping throughout the whole book.
I received an advance copy of this and this is my honest review.
Lucky enough to be an ARC reader for this book and read before publication day. I liked how the characters were introduced explaining their backstory over time and found I got attached and cared what happened as the chapters went on. Mental health was at the forefront of the book which was really good as it made you think about how fragile some people can be, but when supported and encouraged people can make a difference. Story line was easy to follow, chapters weren't too long and I didn't figure out who had done it until near the end. Never read any of her books before, not realising this was a series, I will be reading the previous 3 now and definitely recommend this one.
DCI Grant becomes involved in a case of a young woman's fall from the third floor of a psychiatric hospital. He and his team don't think it was suicide. Grant went to school with the girl's father, so he's close to the case. Maybe too close. This is a really good story of psychological understanding and detection. The team come over as really well filled-out characters. I haven't read all this series but it's possible to read them as stand-alones. This story becomes very exciting and occurs at the time when Grant's daughter is about to get married so there's a bit of personal life impinging on the case. An all-round good read.
Book 4, it might help to read the previous books to connect with Grant and Ruby as well as understand the writing style. Nonetheless, the story itself can be read as a standalone. Grant and Ruby investigate suspicious deaths at a hospital and can only rely on patient Emma to help with the answers. There are various character perspectives so while the story is predominantly written in the third person with every other chapter featuring a first-person narrative, this can initially make the reading jarring. Nonetheless, this is a fast-paced murder mystery.
I received a free copy and am leaving a review voluntarily. Thank you to VRO and author.
This is book 4 in the Detective Grant and Ruby series and once again I was not disappointed.
In this book an old friend of Grant asks him to investigate the apparent suicide of his daughter. With the help of his team, Ruby, Diane and Tom they uncover a web of lies going back many years.
I enjoyed this book, and series, very much. The characters are all extremely likable, my personal favourite being Tom who seemed to come out of his shell more in this book. I did not guess the ending which was a nice surprise. The epilogue gave us a sneak peak as to what the next book may contain and I am very much looking forward to reading it.
I was going to read it as a standalone book. However, as this is a new author for me I decided to read the 3 previous books in the series. What a great decision I made! I’ve really enjoyed the whole series, gripping plots that move with pace and I like the way the reader has been left intrigued about DCI Grant’s childhood at the end of Deadly Silent. Looking forward to the next book in the series.
Received an ARC from this author and the review I leave is both voluntary and honest. Poor Emma lost her whole family as a child and now one by one her friends are dying. Although this is the 4th in the series, it is also a stand alone novel following DCI Grant and his team of professionals as they try to uncover a sociopath hellbent on causing a wave of death and destruction. Brilliant story that has many twists and turns and gets you gripped to the very end.
Phoebe has been to her apartment and she sees the man that attacked her when she was younger. It puts her in a bad place and she is sedated for the night at the hospital. She is lured out of her room and is murdered. Then a nurse from the hospital is murdered. The murderer goes after Emma a friend of Phoebe. It's a guess up to the end who the killer is. Good characters good story line.

We have moved on from an Approved School to a Mental Institution. And the deaths keep coming. The team are working their socks off as there are no clues whatsoever at the murder scenes. All a game of smoke and mirrors along with deaths from the past. Grant is now heading up MIT and has kept the same team from before minus one. Tom and Ruby are getting closer together which brings a bit of light relief. Cannot get enough of this series!
The beginning was interesting and fairly fast-paced, with nice writing. In the middle it started to drag a bit and felt dull, with too many side details that didn’t really add much. And the ending… well — it kind of was and kind of wasn’t 😊
It wasn’t a wow book, but it wasn’t bad either. I wouldn’t reread it, and I don’t quite feel like giving it a full 4 stars, but it wasn’t a 3-star read for me either. Something like 3.4 stars feels about right.
Grant and Ruby are faced with another thrilling murder mystery. His team gets stronger and more integrated with each case. I liked the intricate twists which were so well done, that I was completely wrong about who the murderer was. I liked the well crafted characters too.
I really enjoyed reading Deadly Slient because its keeps you wanting to read more. It has so many twists in it. I thought I had the story figured out then the story twists and keeps you guessing. This book is definitely for people who love crime thrillers. I absolutely loved it.
I was totally immersed in this book, trying to work out who the murderer was. I was unable to put the book down and that is testament to the author's writing and her ability to draw the reader into the story and the characters. Highly recommended.
A great police procedural, well written storyline with a range of characters to both love and hate. I love the dynamics of the team and think this is what makes for a good read. Though this is book 4 in a series it can be read as a standalone, but such great read why not start at the beginning.
I have enjoyed this mystery series. I love the all the characters, especially Dective Grant and his profiler Ruby. This book is full of twist and turns!
When Phoebe, a patient at a psychiatric hospital, falls to her death, one conclusion seems obvious. But DCI Grant has a personal connection to Phoebe, and his team is determined to uncover the truth. The death toll of potentially connected victims mounts, and Grant & Co must sort out the stories of troubled witnesses.
I thought this was an interesting premise that was well handled overall. I loved the pacing. I thought the characters were great. I loved the whodunnit element, and how that was handled.
I absolutely loved this book. It is the first I have read by Ann Girdharry and I will definitely be reading more. It had me hooked from the first page and I couldn't stop reading it!
Twenty one year patient of Moorlands Psychiatric Hospital takes a fall from the top floor, dead. But was it suicide, accident or murder. DCI Grant and his team investigate. Then there is another death. An interesting modern mystery.
Excellent series. Keeps you guessing until the end and hooked from the first chapter. My fingers are crossed there will be more Grant and Ruby books coming. Book 4 was received from the author through Voracious Readers Only.
