About the author

Peter is the pen name of author Jonathan Hurff Glidden. He was born in Kewanee, Illinois, in 1907, and studied English literature at the University of Illinois. In his career as a Western author, Glidden published sixteen Western novels and over one hundred and twenty short novels and short stories for the magazine market. His first novel, The Crimson Horseshow, won the Dodd, Mead Prize as the 1941 Best Western of the Year. He died in 1957.

Note: "Peter Dawson" was also a pen name used by Frederick Faust (better known another of his pen names, Max Brand). Care should be taken when attributing books.

Maybe a 4.5 but close enough to 5 stars. I say that because of the 7 short stories in this collection (all from the 30s), one is so so but the others are all solid to great. Strangely the shortest story is the so so one, Bushwhack Heritage, it seemed rushed so if it was a little longer maybe it could have been better. Dawson is fantastic at shorts, there isnt any preamble or descriptions of the characters, he just gets right to the heart of the story. You see what the characters see without a lot of explanation.

Highly recommended, it has small intros for each story sharing some background. Such as what magazine it was first published, what he was paid for the work, and other tidbits about the history of the story. This really helps to make this a terrific collection.
