This book is my introduction to FC Sayers. I'll read more about this author, and in the process may come to appreciate the finer points of this story. I did learn that this book (as well as some of her others) is 'semi-autobiographical.'
The illustrations by Sewell are lauded by many, but she missed opportunities to help children understand the story. For example, the title refers to bluebonnets and the fields of blue flowers are mentioned several times, but there aren't any images showing the colorful fields. Similarly, Lucinda travels by train from an island to mainland Texas, an image of the train crossing a long bridge would have re-enforced what the trip involved.
