I picked this up at a library book sale. Not familiar with author or series. It literally "was ok" but I feel like it I'm doing a disservice at "2" instead of giving it a "3". Perhaps if I had bought the first book in the series I would be more positive.
The author's research and prose are fine. But "stuff happened": good people got hurt/killed, bad people did bad things/screwed up, two long-time antagonists came into conflict again and the good guy was the victor. It never really "gripped me" and often the plot twists were telegraphed far in advance.
I've certainly read worse books and I suspect that had I started with the origins of the characters and their conflicts & sub-plots I would have been more enthusiastic and charitable in my review and ranking. I may go back and find the lead-off volume just to see. If you have been reading these tales and like them I think you are probably the better judge right now.
