Leonardos da Vinci : 5 Volume Set

Rate this book
Edited with an introduction by a leading Leonardo manuscript specialist, this five-volume series reproducing over 150 articles is organized with an eye to making scholarly Leonardo studies more widely accessible without sacrificing the rigor of scholarship. More than an assembly of outstanding articles, this mini-archive is an effective research tool to rehistoricize the artist or to acquaint students with Leonardo's writings and works. Every volume begins with overviews. Volume 1 includes an extensive selection of out-of-print, pre-twentieth century biographies and art criticism, in their original language of publication where translations are not available. The other four volumes are devoted to scholarship in English. Volumes 2 and 3 cover Leonardo's artistic career, organized to give an immediate overview of state-of-the-scholarship on the artist's drawings, paintings, sculpture, and architecture. Volume 4 is devoted to Leonardo's thought and writings on art; and Volume 5 offers an unprecedented collection of his varied scientific studies related to art, accessibly written by leading historians of science.
The entire collection will be useful in the undergraduate classroom and will inform general readers on almost all aspects of Leonardo's career. The collection also offers graduate students and research scholars the first presentation of primary sources and secondary scholarship on Leonardo da Vinci arranged chronologically by literary genre and subject matter to facilitate historiographical and other original research.
