When Dallas Church ran full speed to the point of impact, his only goal was to help anyone he could. He did not know or care that being so close to the meteor would change him so drastically. In the year that followed, Dallas would be hailed as a hero, the rookie cop who risked everything to save others, then persecuted and outcast as a monster when the real effects of his exposure to the meteor became clear. Fortunately, Dallas is recruited by an organization promising to use his newly evolved talents to provide security for others. As the team forms, Dallas and his new colleagues must learn to trust each other and to accept their diversity. Dallas soon discovers his power is linked to a greater evil. As he sacrifices everything to save a child, he learns that these events, and he himself, are not what he had believed.
RJ Riggs' debut novel is a quick read, not because of the length but because he writes with a smooth flow, with every page advancing the narrative. Offering an easy blend of genres, expect a story woven with seeming influences from fights with a Dungeons & Dragons flair, the comic excitement of Marvel, touches of horror reminding me of Dean Koontz, and the strategic development aligned with Tom Clancy-esque political thrillers.
The modern world is going about its business when meteorites smash into the Earth. Those surviving within the vicinity of these bombardments become "infected," causing political upheaval against people who have gained superhuman abilities. A dynamic group is formed spanning ages, genders, and races. In their quest to fulfill their duty to humanity, they begin to uncover a truly sinister conspiracy.
Be forewarned - this is a page-turner. You will be up until 4 AM because of Rigg's masterful use of building suspense, only for the resolved answers to lead to more questions until it comes together in one of the most clever fashions imaginable.
I eagerly await a follow-up to this novel from Riggs.
