Gypsy Jane moved through the London underworld like a force of nature. Hardened criminals feared and respected her in equal measure as she made a reputation as the hardest and most dangerous female criminal in Britain.
Not a book that I would normally go for, however this ladies life story was amazing, her morals are flawless. The book itself was very well written and I couldn't put it down. Finished it within 24 hours. Would recommend
I was really excited at the thought of reading this but was a bit dissapointed. It was very easy to read; i finished it in just a few hours, but from almost the very first page there things that just didn't add up. I have lived a similar life to Jane ,without all the violence, but with crime and jail time so could relate to a lot of it and enjoyed it,but every now and then i would think NO WAY. I have a feeling the word Gypsy was used in the title just to sell more copies. Just because her father was born in a cart before the war she calls herself a gypsy even though she has never acctually lived the travelling life herself.Jane made a nice living for herself doing the booze and baccy runs and this part of the book is easily believable until she makes the mistake of saying she was the only woman that did it.I hope Jane has now found the peace in her life she was always looking for. This book was so-so but i think they got the genre wrong;it belongs with the fiction.
I read this book really quickly- it was enticing and a good tale. Gypsy Jane is something of a crazy phenomenon who rocked the London underworld with some pretty brutal firsthand tales. It didn't take much for the Gran to pay a visit to any dissidents and she'd be brandishing a samurai sword or her cherished shooters. From bootlegging booze across the Channel after an early career as an armed robber, Jane was never frightened to mix it. If you had the front to rip her off in a drug deal, she'd be through your door, terrorising you. After being shot by armed police four times after a set up on an armed robbery, she had her first jail experience. Her life is laid bare in this story and Jane seems a very passionate, loving woman who idolised the love of her life, Gangster Matt, and her son. On the inside she is a caring family woman but her gypsy blood doesn't allow her to settle whenever she senses danger and she rises to the challenge in an instant. After going straight after several prison sentences, her 'normal' life in the real world leads her to plot a series of four murders which luckily, in the end, she manages to avoid carrying out. An interesting book by a larger than life character.
This was an audiobook for me and I did enjoy this.
This is Jane's story. An incredibly well known Criminal which is quite unusual for a woman. The story starts with Jane in hospital with 4 bullet holes in her, and the police put them there! This book seems quite far fetched but it must be true as it's a biography. I was surprised that if she was so well known and notorious that I would have heard of her but I hadn't.
The story skips back to explain how she was brought up and when she became involved in crime. She seems an extremely hard nut to crack! Facing gang bosses, keeping multiple guns and using them frequently. She definitely has a story to tell, whether all of it is true or not, I'm not convinced. It was a good read though, or listen in my case.
I downloaded this free to my Kindle as I thought it was different to my usual books and it sounded interesting. It was very easy to read and I found her early years with her mother extremely sad. It was a bit shocking how much she enjoyed being "bad" and I found I couldn't relate to the amount of violence that seemed to be the norm. She had a tough life but did seem to bounce back. I felt the book lacked some depth and I began to get a little bored as it was almost like a diary rather than a book. I was glad to have read it as it's a change from my usual books but it wasn't much of a challenge.
Read this because I wanted a change from the chick lit I had been indulging in & it was certainly different. It was ok - I would have liked more insight into what made her the violent woman she became. It was interesting to see the softer woman she could be with her true love but not really my sort of book.
Brilliant read i couldn't put it down. Its packed with her life and its so far from your normal life shes been shot by the police 4 times and shes still here to tell her story. I hope Jane has a much better life and can only wish her a good and happy future.
It seems to me that Jane Lee's story is probably far tougher than the book. As she suffered abuse from her mum growing up, she missed out on a happy childhood. She has an amazingly strong character and is full of humanity, even though she used violence as a means to an end, to bring up her son as best as she could. Jane Lee doesn't glorify her crimes, she says it was all nasty and she does feel sad but she's not ashamed, she didn't aim her violence at innocents, it was the world of criminals that surrounded her who were her targets. She's also perhaps not the best at choosing men, as she needs to be loved too much maybe? Her accounts of life in prison are a bit rosy but that is her all over, she doesn't let anyone get her down. It is really a story of a born survivor, but not someone who will do anything to survive, she has a code of behaviour. I like her a lot!
