Bobby Russo is a nineteen-year-old Long Islander who looks to find answers by going out into the world after the untimely death of his younger brother. Along the way Bobby gets into fights, has sex, does drugs, drinks, and escapes precarious situations. Bobby’s quest takes him from New York to Florida, and he encounters diverse characters in the various places he stops. Bobby forms relationships with some of these Frankie, the young girl who is escaping her own problems at home; Ramapo, the part Native American drifter who has his share of demons; and Kermit, Ramapo’s old friend, who longs to escape to the warmth of Florida. During the course of his journey, Bobby increasingly finds there are more questions than answers about his place in the world, and he inadvertently discovers that his family and the hometown from which he is running away have an inexorable tug on his soul.
