The story of Lasorda's experiences with the Dodgers over more than forty years--as scout, player, coach, and manager--is laced with legendary baseball stories and marked by a unique celebration of the sport
“Cut me open and I will bleed Dodger blue.” ~ Tommy Lasorda
You think you know Tommy Lasorda? You haven’t until you’ve read this book. In Tommy’s own words, he tells you his own American success story, from pitching left-hand in the minors to becoming one of the most beloved (and hated) controversial managers in major league history. A must read for any baseball fan.
I know nothing about baseball. I don't even like baseball, but this book wasn't so much about baseball as it was the story of someone who loved the game and had great drive, work ethic, confidence in himself and his players who turned out to be one of the great baseball managers. I don't know how much David Fisher contributed, but between them, they managed to write a humorous book filled with interesting stories.
If you are true Dodger fan you will enjoy Tommy’s tales. Baseball fans will appreciate Tommy’s journey. He was lucky, the son of two poor Italian immigrants from Norristown now managing “the greatest franchise in baseball” in the “greatest country on the face of the earth.”
Although it is entertaining, there numerous fabrications and errors in this 1980s autobiography. Bill Plaschke's "I Live for This" is a better book and obviously covers a much larger portion of Lasorda's life and career.
I am a big Dodger fan and have always liked Tommy Lasorda. The book was published in ‘85, yet many of the stories here good reminders of the great Dodger teams in the 70’s and 80’s.
