About the author

Henry Stedman Nourse was, in 1890, a founding member of the board of the Massachusetts Free Public Library Commission, which continues to exist today as The Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. As a local historian, was the guiding intelligence behind the development of the Lancaster Collection of the Lancaster Town Library (now the Thayer Memorial Library).

Realizing the importance of primary sources, he produced several major compilations of records pertaining to Lancaster, including The Early Records of Lancaster (1884) and The Birth, Marriage and Death Register... of Lancaster (1890) He also wrote numerous historical articles for the Clinton Current, according to The Times & Courier of Clinton, MA. rather than Nourse was asked to write the official history of Lancaster, Nourse made sure his superior knowledge was not lost to the public. He His annotated edition of Abijah Marvin's History of the Town of Lancaster (1879) included many corrections and voluminous notes, expanding the original single volume into four volumes, which are now in the Lancaster Collection.
