This series is a collection of some of the best known stories from around the world carefully adapted for children to read themselves. 'The Big Carrot' is based on the traditional tale of 'The Enormous Turnip'.
A simple version of 'The Enormous Turnip' that tells a very similar story but more reliant on visuals than text. As a nice ending they make carrot soup at the end - yum!
Miss 3 and I like to explore different books at the library and try to get different ones out every week or so; it's fun for both of us to have the variety and to look at a mix of new & favourite authors.
This books tells the story of a big carrot. Page by page it introduces a new character to assist in attempting to pull the carrot. As it it deeply rooted in the garden it takes the help of several individuals and even some animals to uproot the carrot.
This story is good for children learning English as an additional language or children just being introduced to reading as the words are simple and are repeated continuously throughout the story. The images are excellent in portraying the tale and this helps the children to paint a picture of the story in their mind and allows them to figure out the story in their own words. I found it especially useful when counting the number of characters pulling the characters, therefore this book is cross curricular as it can be linked to mathematics.
