A historical ethnography of West Sayville, NY, a small Long Island community of oyster fisherman of Netherlands ancestry whose product was sold in an international market. The focus is the nineteenth and early twentieth century, with due attention to the community as it is today, and addresses ethnicity, class, religious factionalism, the Protestant ethic, and the relation between the pursuit of individual interest and the maintenance of community solidarity.
