This book is one from a series by different authors which explore important dates in history such as Armistice Day (11 November 1918), the fall of the Berlin Wall (10 November 1989) or the day that Nelson Mandela was released (11 February 1990). The books explain what happened on that day, the background events and then describe how things changed afterwards.

This is book 4 in the series. It describes how on the 6th February 1918, women in Britain were awarded the right to vote in a general election for the first time. For many years they hadn’t been allowed to vote because men thought they could not or should not be involved in politics. There were many women who disagreed and they began a long, difficult and sometimes dangerous fight for the right to vote.

The earliest campaigners for women’s votes were known as suffragists. They believed in peaceful and legal ways of campaigning. By the early 20th century, not much had changed so a new group of activists were created. These women were willing to take violent action to achieve their goal. They became known as Suffragettes.

The book gives a basic factual introduction to the topic in simple to understand language and has useful photographs, maps and timelines.
