Oh, this is a wonderful, wonderful book. It has my brain bubbling. I can think of so, so many ways to use this in the classroom. I can especially imagine this appealing to those children who love to find little things on the playground and imagine a world for them.
Lesson Connection Writing and Art - maybe a class or group project to accompany our art unit?
When I noticed that the esteemed Paul Hankins had read a plethora of ABC books recently, I asked him which was his favorite. He selected this one, so I checked it out! The pictures/collections and accompanying text are very imaginative, and I think it would be wonderful to give students a letter and have them create their own found poem for it. My only quibble is two scientific details; a train of that type on land would not go faster than the speed of sound (but I guess kids might think so), and the page about floating is a little incorrect. Maybe I'm just being nitpicky because I taught science for twenty three years.
The poems are just ok, and the alphabet stuff feels very tacked on, but I love the art made from found objects. Great for a class or storytime art project, tie into recycling theme.
Objects are created with items found lying around here and there. Each object begins with a different letter of the alphabet and is accompanied by a lovely rhyme to go with it.
