World Book. (2011). The World Book encyclopedia of people and places (Vols. 1-7). New York: Author.
Citation created by: Meagan Moremen
Call Number: REF 910.3
Description: A 7 volume set of countries arranged alphabetically describing the geography, politics, culture, history, etc. of that region.
Content/scope: This encyclopedia of geography is filled with photographs, maps, charts, and illustrations. The amount of information provide for each country depends on the size of the country, for example, some countries have over 20 pages of information while smaller countries may only have 2 pages. Recommended for grades 5 and up.
Accuracy/Authority: World book is a very well-known encyclopedia producer with many editors and contributors. This collection is updated and reprinted annually.
Arrangement/Presentation: Arranged alphabetically by country. Contains photographs, maps, charts, and illustrations. Volume 7 contains the index.
Relation to Similar Works: This set is similar to the layout and content of the Kingfisher Geography Encyclopedia but on a much larger scale with 7 volumes where as Kingfisher is only one.
Timeliness/Permanence: This collection is edited and reprinted annually. Replacing this collection annually would be too costly for a school library but this collection would need to be replaced at least every five years to accommodate political changes.
Cost: $351 set
Rationale for Selection: This collection was selected to allow students to study other cultures that they may not be able to visit. I also chose this set in comparison to the Kingfisher Geography Encyclopedia to accommodate varying budgets. The World Book set is much more costly and would not be able to be replaced yearly as the Kingfisher could be.
Professional Review: Library Journal, 3/15/2007, Vol. 132 Issue 5, p96-98, 2p

This reference book begins with an easy to understand political world map and an explanation of the independent and dependent countries. Each place which is covered in this resource focuses on basic details about the country, its government, features of the local people, technological components of society and an overview of the key economical features. In more detail, topics such as history of the country, climate, geographical features, culture and the people today are covered. Each page is filled with supporting visuals, ranging from tables, maps and pictures, which clearly reveal more detail about the country.
I found his to be an excellent middle school reference resource. There is a good balance between print and visuals on each page, making it approachable for middle school students. However, the content is presented in a manner which makes it interesting and informative for older students and adults. For instance, I found great support in this resource for my grade 8 social studies unit on Japan. It is a great supplementary resource for this content area.
