Here is the updated and revised edition of David M. Cathers†ground-breaking book on American Arts and Crafts furniture. Originally published in 1981, this revised edition provides authoritative information on Gustav Stickleyâ€s Craftsman Workshops, the L. & J.G. Stickley Furniure Company, and the Roycroft Shops. 256 pp.
This coffee table book obviously is not for everyone (one evening, while sitting across from me my wife said, "I don't think people actually read those kinds of books cover to cover"), but if you're interested in the Arts and Crafts movement, or Mission furniture in general, then this book provides an in depth study of the structural details that define these pieces as well as some interesting biographical information on the Stickley brothers alongside some of the style's other innovators. The pictures are fairly poor quality for being a "coffee table book," but the text is well done and I found the excerpts of Gustav Stickley's writing probably the most compelling element—as a kind of poetics of form following function.
