This is a tiny book both in physical size and the number of pages. Therefore it could never qualify as an excellent detailed resource book about Dr. Bach Flower Remedies. However that’s not what the book is intended to be. It’s one of the books in the “In A Nutshell Series” and does an excellent job of doing just that – condensing and organizing a lot of pertinent information into a short, easily understood nutshell.
As an introductory book it is excellent. It would also make a great quick reference guide on the topic. The book’s organization and layout make up for its diminutive size. There is a lot of information packed into few words. The author has done a good job of research and distilling the information into an informative précis. Nothing is superfluous. Additionally, the pictures, drawings and colour make the book visually appealing and break up what could easily have been monotonous if printed as a “text only” black and white publication.
An added bonus is a section on Dr. Bach’s classification of the 38 remedies into 7 emotional groups which is a big assistance for anyone trying to narrow down or hone their remedy choices to help restore emotional balance. Fyi, a key concept behind the remedies is the mind, body and spirit connection. Dr. Bach was a well-known British bacteriologist, physician and pathologist and had observed in his work that the treatment required to heal identical physical illnesses varied significantly between individuals and was very much dependant on the emotional and energetic state of each individual. Each remedy is associated with a specific mental state or emotion. Dr Bach believed that healing on an emotional level had positive impacts on all other levels of the body, mind and spirit and that a healthy emotional life and a balanced personality would allow each person’s body to find its own natural state of health. Dr. Bach developed 38 flower essences to address each individual’s needs in the 1920’s and 1930’s. They are still being made using their original formulae today. The Bach remedies don't treat physical complaints directly. Instead they help by treating the negative emotional states that provoke or worsen illnesses.
Dr. Bach’s own life is very interesting and inspirational. This link on The Bach Centre website has a very brief synopsis of his life and work if you wish to learn a bit more. http://www.bachcentre.com/centre/drba...
The design of Bach Flower Remedies – A Step by Step Guide (In A Nutshell Series) by Non Shaw has been well thought out. The pictures, layout and colour highlights are visually appealing and common to each of Dr. Bach’s Flower Remedies. Key expected outcomes for each remedy are summarized into only a few words. There is more detailed information on the same or accompanying page available. The theme, highlight boxes and topics covered for each of Dr. Bach’s Flower Remedies and the section on the 7 emotional groups of flowers make it a very useful reference resource to quickly look something up.
This would be a 3 star book if I was rating it as a thorough reference book but as a book in the “In A Nutshell” series, it warrants a 4 star above average rating.
