Media Life

Rate this book
Research consistently shows how through the years more of our time gets spent using media, how multitasking our media has become a regular feature of everyday life, and that consuming media for most people increasingly takes place alongside producing media. Media Life is a primer on how we may think of our lives as lived in rather than with media. The book uses the way media function today as a prism to understand key issues in contemporary society, where reality is open source, identities are - like websites - always under construction, and where private life is lived in public forever more.

Ultimately, media are to us as water is to fish. The question how can we live a good life in media like fish in water? Media Life offers a compass for the way ahead.

The discussion of zombiefication was interesting but lacked internal structure - it appears Deuze has attempted to co-opt a popular term for the shock value / currency rather than to properly investigate the phenomena he attempts to describe. In particular, his classification of media turning us into zombies through decreased awareness of our surroundings precludes a conceptualisation of our 'digital surrounds' as being as embedded in our experience as the physical world. In this case, he falls prey to the type of material/digital divide that he is attempting to break down with the concept of a media life.

A thoughtful and well-researched look into how life is influenced by media. Drawing on philosophy, psychology, sociology, literature, and entertainment as well as academic media research, Media Life can be summed up by a statement found in its conclusion: In media, we are Gods.
Anyone who wants to understand modern society and the relationship one has with media should read this. Eyeopeners at all pages. This book takes the notion of Media to the next level. A number of scholars in varying disciplines and areas of research such as critical theorists, postmodernists, deconstructionists, poststructuralists, social critics, neo-Marxists, phenomenologists and others had their say on media, but Deuze combined various previous approaches and took into consideration the latest development in social networking, wireless mesh network, the internet of things, NFC protocols, and the latest development in the realm of media to produce this rather unusual interpretation of the current state of the world.

Silly how we artificially made our surroundings to long for the natural way of things and to seek in media ways to emancipate ourselves to how things used to be.
