Although this book was written in '94 (the marketing bit isn't updated for the internet age), it's full of useful information for the beginning small farmer. The author covers everything from different points of sale to crop selection to advertising to soil preparation, you name it. His last chapter, "Conversations", is a series of interviews with actual small farmers about how they got started and operate daily.
The most valuable part of this book, for me, were the checklists and lists of questions to ask yourself about selecting crops, signing a land lease contract, troubleshooting sick plants, budgeting for infrastructure build out, etc. While the book doesn't get too technical, I think it's a necessary starting point for someone new to small farming who needs basic information condensed into one place.
