Simon Schwartzman é presidente do Instituto de Estudos do Trabalho e Sociedade do Rio de Janeiro. Entre 1994 e 1998 foi presidente do Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística e, antes, professor e pesquisador da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Universidade de São Paulo, Fundação
Getulio Vargas e Instituto Universitário de Pesquisas do Rio de Janeiro. Doutor em Ciência Política pela Universidade da Califórnia, Berkeley, foi professor visitante nas universidades de Columbia, Califórnia/Berkeley, Harvard e Stanford.
