With Desiderium Sapientiae (The Desire for Wisdom) written in 1996, and Le Porte Celesti (The Doors of Heaven) published in 1999, now both out of print, Renzo Manetti returns in this book to his favorite theme of medieval sacred architecture and its symbols. Taking his cue from the complex symbolic vocabulary of the Basilica of San Miniato al Monte in Florence, he explores the true significance of the church as a Door to Heaven, one of those mysterious thin places on our planet where the spirit materializes and the body becomes spirit under the influence of powerful currents of energy. This new essay completes his first historical novel Il Segreto di San Miniato (The Secret of San Miniato), explaining some of the more arcane passages in the novel which may appear at first sight to be beyond the informed layman's grasp. The two books are complementary because each contains something the other is missing. This essay explains the symbols, but only the novel provides the key to open the hidden door. About the author

Studioso di storia dell’architettura e della città, di iconologia e simbolismo, ha al suo attivo ad oggi oltre 150 pubblicazioni, nonché la partecipazione e l’organizzazione di numerose mostre e convegni. E’ membro dell’Accademia delle Arti del Disegno. Fa parte del comitato di redazione della rivista “Il governo delle Idee”. I suoi primi studi si sono rivolti alla storia dell’architettura e della fortificazione. Ne sono sintesi numerose pubblicazioni fra le quali alcune monografie: “Firenze: le porte dell’ultima cerchia di mura” del 1979, “Michelangelo: le fortificazioni per l’assedio di Firenze” del 1980, col quale instaurò una preziosa collaborazione col compianto Charles De Tolnay e la Casa Buonarroti. Quest’ultimo saggio ha avuto prestigiose recensioni per l’importanza dei documenti scoperti. Alla storia della città appartengono la monografia del 1981 “Gli affreschi di villa Arrivabene.Città ed eserciti nell’Europa del Cinquecento” e quella del 1989 ”Giuseppe Poggi e Firenze. Disegni di architetture e città”.
Fra gli altri saggi, si ricorda “Antonio da Sangallo: arte fortificatoria e simbolismo neoplatonico nella fortezza di Firenze”negli Atti del Convegno internazionale di Studi “Architettura militare nell’Europa del XVI secolo” del 1988, nel quale il tema della fortificazione si coniuga per la prima volta con quello dei simboli. Da allora il suo campo di studi si sposta su iconologia e simbolismo.
Nel 1992 pubblica “Amor Sapientiae nella facciata di Palazzo Medici”, nel quadro delle manifestazioni per il centenario di Lorenzo il Magnifico. Seguono importanti monografie: nel 1996

I bought this from the monks' (or is it friars, I always confuse them…) shop by the basilica, so I thought it would be at least somewhat not very new age. But I was wrong. It is a fine example of "fictitious non-fiction", so typical of esoteric studies, perhaps too "enthusiastic" with the facts. Funnily enough, non-controversial facts have nice references, but outrageous claims do not.

But if you take the book as a fiction, or, even better, as a source material for your next book in vein of Dan Brown, then it is a nice little read. Lots of pointers to interesting stuff, some more believable, some less. And the basilica of San Miniato is well worth the visit!
