English The American André Previn (b. 1929 in Berlin) is one of the most versatile musicians of today. For over thirty years he has directed the leading orchestras of the world and recorded over 300 records. As a classical piano virtuoso he has worked with such distinguished colleagues as Vladimir Ashkenazy and Leonard Bernstein. He also worked in Hollywood, where, among other distinctions, he won four Oscars. Moreover, at the height of his influence he played on the legendary Jazz stages of the Newport Jazz Festival and the Apollo Theater in New York and his was the first Jazz album to be certified platinum. While he had songs at the top of the American Billboard-Pop charts, he developed his version of "A Streetcar Named Desire" (1988) into one of the most staged contemporary operas. Over a half century of work he has won over a dozen Grammy awards in "Crossover", "Classical", "Jazz", "Film", and "Pop music" categories as well as a Lifetime Achievement Award. Frédéric Döhl traces this remarkable artistic career. Special attention is given to the portrayal of the character of Previns aesthetic and biography as well as the reactions, which he encountered throughout his life.

Er dirigierte ueber Jahrzehnte die fuehrenden Orchester der Welt und nahm ueber 300 Tonträger auf. Als klassischer Klaviervirtuose arbeitete er mit Kollegen wie Vladimir Ashkenazy oder Leonard Bernstein. Er wirkte auch in Hollywood, wo er u.a. vier Oscars gewann. Auf dem Höhepunkt ihrer Bedeutung spielte er zudem auf legendären Jazzbuehnen wie dem Newport Jazz Festival oder dem Apollo Theatre in New York; das erste Jazzalbum, das sich mehr als eine Millionen Mal verkaufte, geht auf sein Konto. Während er Lieder an der Spitze der amerikanischen Billboard-Popcharts hatte, entwickelte sich seine Fassung von A Streetcar Named Desire (1998) zu einer der meistinszenierten zeitgenössischen Opern. Er gewann ueber ein halbes Jahrhundert verteilt ein Dutzend Grammys in Crossover, Klassik, Jazz, Film- und Popmusik sowie fuer seine Lebensleistung.
