Impressions of French 1828-1945 There is no denying that the seventy-one paintings and drawings assembled in this catalogue form a somewhat random group; yet, it is truly remarkable what a thorough overview they provide of the multiplicity of artistic trends in France from the date of the earliest, an 1828 oil sketch of Italy by Corot (no. 15) to the latest, a Matisse still-life drawing of 1945 (no. 44) It is immediately evident that many of the greatest artists active during this time are represented. This catalogue with 70 color plates and 21 black and white illustrations chronicles an exhibition at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art which was organized in 1997 and opened in January of 1998. All the pictures in the exhibition were drawn from Santa Barbara collections.
