Kriyananda (born James Donald Walters; May 19, 1926, Azuga – April 21, 2013, Assisi) was a direct disciple of the yogi Paramahansa Yogananda, and the founder of the Ananda, a worldwide movement of spiritual intentional communities based on Yogananda's World Brotherhood Colonies ideal. Yogananda made Walters a minister for his organization, Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF).
Another fine book by Swami Kriyananda. I read this book over a long period of time - little bits here and there. The information in the book is deep, but presented in a very readable and understandable fashion, and lends itself to that type of reading. I read a little during breaks from work and then thought about it for the rest of the day. An enjoyable and informative book.
This book has valuable information, but its poor organization makes it difficult to access those nuggets. There was a lot of "I won't go into this now because it is covered in a later chapter" yet never addressed in later chapters.
One of my favorite lines: "If after meditation, you find yourself wondering vaguely, 'Where am I?' the chances are you were slipping into subconsciousness, not rising toward superconsciousness." So many people brag about how deep their meditation was, and it made me chuckle to think they might be actually moving in the wrong direction.
The basic attitudes of yoga were very instructive. The meditation exercises were not helpful for me. Again, lots of great wisdom buried in here if you have the patience to weed through some of the disorganization.
Excellent discussion of the comparisons of Buddhist and Advaita philosophies specifically related to Nirvana. This is also a guide to super consciousness through meditation, prayer chanting and amongst other things. This book is very theoretical and does not seem very useful in terms of a practice.
A beautiful summary of many key attitudes and techniques for the spiritual path. Our book study group just had 18 weeks of very fruitful discussions based on these chapters.
