Looking for Mies

Rate this book
Mies van der Rohe in a steel and glass building smoking a cigar - this historical photograph of the world-famous architect fascinated and intrigued Richard Daza so much that he painstakingly researched the events surrounding it. He takes the reader step by step through all the architectonic and personal details in the photograph, interpreting and analysing them. With the tension of a thriller, he examines the evidence, makes deductions and gradually brings to light elements of Mies biography, enhanced by attractive sequences of illustrations. From this one photograph the author draws a skillful picture of Mies - the architecture, the man and his character. In cooperation with Actar, Barcelona

Surprisingly while I had picked the book up on an impulse, it turned out to be an interesting book.

Getting to know the building and the architect just by analysing one single picture is pretty unique and impressive. the book is put up in a way that will keep us reading into it to discover the next thing without caring about the time.

Thought the book has more pictures than words, I still can say with confidence, if the reader is completely focused while reading he will learn plenty of things about the building, the photographer, the site of the building, the architect- personality and lifestyle- plus how he designed the crown hall institute. furthermore, from the whole book, he will discover how to analyze one single picture, uncovering a whole new side of it.

**Highly recommended - since I had a great time reading it :')

This was an interesting concept for the book. Using this one photo, the author acted as detective to find out as much about Mies as he could. Most of this information is pretty common knowledge for people who went to his school and worked at his firm, but it was still a fun little read.
